Hi, this is my first project on my Nilus loom. The sett is 18epi and I threaded the reed 1/2. However, every time I change treadles the 2 threads in the same dent stick together and the one that is supposed to fall won't. It has taken me 2 days to weave 7 inches because I have to untangle the threads every time. This has been quite frustrating, what am I doing wrong?

I am such an idiot.  I did not put the warp threads over the back beam.  I had it going straight from the warping beam to the heddles.  It works perfect now.

LOL!  I think we've all done that at one point or another.  Kudos for figuring it out!

Good for you for figuring that out. We all make mistakes even us who have been weaving for years. I did something like that when I warped on a new loom and I had been weaving for about 15 years.

I did that, not once but twice in a row.  :D  Welcome to the wonderful world of weaving!  :DDDD

cheers,

lol......I'm glad i'm not the only one!  I felt silly when i realized my mistake.

I was about to respond earlier to ask did you do one of my early mistakes and find out that the warp yarns were crossed or braided between the warp beam and the heddles. It is also not uncommon to "loose a yarn" while sleying the reed only to find it after you get almost to the last dent.

Continuing to weave with the warp going directly from the warp beam to the heddles will be very hard on your warp.   If you have a piece of pipe, you can release the tension on the warp and slide it under the warp.   Then, using a little piece of wood as a spacer on each end, clamp the pipe onto the underside of the back beam.  Exactly how to do this will be dependent on the exact loom you are using, but you should be able to get it to work.   Just in case, string a strong rope through the pipe and tie the ends to the back beam also.   That way you have a "fail safe" if the clamps slip, etc.   In fact, the ropes alone might be all you need.  Again, it will depend on the geometry of your loom.

PS.   Make sure the pipe is clean.

Any time you totally loosen warp tension you run a risk of getting uneven tension when you retension it. That said, you can loosen the warp tension, unscrew the back beam and slide it under the warp. Lift the beam, with the warp, into it's normal position and reattach it. Tighten the warp and check your tension, then weave. The worst that can happen is that you have to start over and get more practice;^}.

You may need a square drive screw driver. I know my LeClerc looms have square drive screws.

I hope this helps.

Of course, you have to loosen tension to advance the warp, so we do this all the time.  And not all back beams come off.   My Macomber has three screws on each side so it might come off, but sometimes things are screwed in and glued!

The back beam on my Macomber comes right off when you undo those three screws. Guess how I know! Yes I had 1/2 the warp tied on and discovered I had failed to go over the back beam. But it was an easy fix by taking that back beam off. Good thing too because I have done it more than once now.LOL

Some times when we get old we get forgetful.(Good excuse huh)

Actually, my back beam came right off and I was able to finish my dish towels. They are far from perfect, but I am thrilled to have made them! Thanks for all of the help. I'm excited about putting on my next warp, correctly this time.
