Notes

This is a scarf from my continuing exploration of making warp stripes using self-striping sock yarn.  I altered the width of the stripes by putting 4 of the solid color stripes together to get the kind of stripe I wanted on the piece.  I used the "spagetti" method of warping (not one of the best methods).  Because the color stripes were 5 yards and 10 yards long on this yarn, I made a 5 yard warp.  I pulled the yarn out of the skein until it changed color, then I cut it and threaded it in the reed.  The 5 yard length of warp was just pooled on the floor.  As I pulled out each color, I placed it in the reed in the place that color stripe was.  I decided on the speckled stripes on the sides and two solid color stripes in the body of the scarf.  I used almost all the yarn for the scarf, only 1 length of yarn in three solid colors and 2 lengths in one of the colors left after I had threaded.  The mess that you see on the picture was not that bad to straighten, the warp was narrow and short (5 yards) so it only took about an hour after the heddles were threaded.

I used a solid color weft in a soft alpaca/silk yarn in a tan color.  I wove the pattern easily, although because of the four color stripe in the point twill, it does not show as well as I had hoped.  I ended up with one long scarf for me to wear and a shorter on that fit on the display to enter in the guild show.

I checked my notes and the sett is 12 epi. I think it would have been better at 15, but the light, airy scarf seems to be working well, I have been wearing it with my coat.
