I was just given a 5ft tall older vertical warping mill and need help trying to figure out how to rehab it.

Does anyone know what make this is?

Does anyone know what goes in the holes on the vertical bars?

Why doesn't the peg bar go anywhere other than on the very top and very bottom?

TIA for any suggetions or help.

Claudia - I, too, received 50% of a warping mill, and am trying to restore it.  Mine isn't nearly as grand as yours, mine is a leclerc table-top model.  For me, the biggest challenge is that the base is missing, and I am considering converting to horizontal, as that seems an easier problem to solve.

Maybe we can help each other out, at least with encouragement?  I'm very excited about having a warping mill, measuring is one of my least-favorite steps.

Check the Leclerc website.  The base is really very simple.  It is heavy and thick as you need that for stability.  It may be very easy to make.

Since it is made of wood, you can simply drill holes for the cross pieces, so that you can put them at the height you want.

I can't see that well from postage stamps, but it looks a lot like the design of Ed Worst. I know it's likely a Leclerc like others have stated, but if you have Worst's book, the drawing design of his has a base the same as yours. I built one, and have used it the last 5 years now. I drilled holes in places on the uprights for a dowel as a turn point as my warps are not super long and Worst's has a cross on the bottom and top which are probably great for those long ones.

Thanks all.  ReedGuy, I have never heard of Worst but will see if I can find his book.  The general consensus is to drill holes where I want/need them and enjoy the mill.  I think that's what we'll do.  Otherwise, I'll be winding 18 yard warps.

Claudia, if you have a top cross bar to make a cross then all you need is a dowel that fits any of the lower holes is the uprights.  Use this to return to the top.  You will only have a cross up top but can wind a warp of any length.

Ed Worst's "Foot Powered Loom Weaving" is over at archive.org

Just search the title and a PDF option is one you can download, not sure if there is a kindle document or not.

The book is often in reprint as well and I know of one person in a study group right now using the book.

thank you for the link.  What length of warp can you wind on that particular warping reel?  Unbeknownst to my dear husband, he is going to be making me one for my birthday.  >:-]
