I'm looking at weaving a scarf in the pattern in Strickler's 8 shaft book # 173, p. 41, the "Bethlehem star"

it says to treadle "Crackle-fashion".

Is the treadling already represented that way in the draft? Or do I have to add tabby or what?

Maybe this helps, I don't have that literature. In crackle 5 or 6 treadles areused, alternate between pattern and tabby.

The draft shows the treadling and uses 7 treadles, there is no indication of using tabby except in the description of the pattern which says to treadle 'crackle fashion'

the next pattern on the same page#174 which has the same threading but a different tie up, actually indicates to use tabby, so if tabby is to be used on #173, I would think it would also show it, but it doesn't.

And #174 does not look at all like it would be any kind of 'star' pattern.

this is confusing to me, does anyone have the book to look at, so my question makes more sense?

I only have one book with some sample crackle drafts and they all have tabby ground threads in the treadling.

How many shafts? Crackle uses 4.

I'm wondering if it's a different block weave, such as tied lampas

You said that you wanted to weave pattern #173.   There are two pattern on that page, and the note about weaving "crackle fashion" refers to pattern #174, not #173.   The treddling for #173 is shown at the top of the page.

Note that for the treddling for #173, you need to "reverse to beginning."   Tabby is not used for #173, but is for #174.

Thank you so much Sally. Somehow I thought the instruction to weave crackle fashion implied that I had to know how to do something other than follow the draft.
