I have used a sock weight yarn for warping for a scarf.  I find that I can then weave any weight scarf I want.  Since I do not have reeds for heavier yarns I kind of go with what works.  There are no absolute rules, just ideas to try.

I did a rug with a sisal core and warped every one inch with a linen rug warp.  It gave a whole different appearance and when I felted it slightly in the bathtub, I distorted it so that it then became like a pebbled path.  I liked it, maybe not everyone else but, oh well, it was for me anyway.

A guild member made a scarf with a bulky yarn on a RH and only used it in the slots, then used a coordinating color of a finer weight yarn for the holes. It came out really nice. Of course your yarn might still be too bulky for the slots.

I'm intrigued by the possibilities. I have a lot of bulky yarn in my stash and was wondering the same thing. I was thinking of using the thickest thing I could fit in the heddle, sett fairly wide so it would be pretty balanced, but I suppose I should just try sampling things.

I would likely choose to use the super bulky on weft runs and use something smaller in the warp. A combination where I used up some regular knitting yarn was to warp with heavy duty poly/cotton upholstery sewing thread about 2 inches wide with my 12 dent reed. I wove a lavender color knitting yarn as the weft and the result was a 1.75 inch wide tight weave bookmark that looked much like inkle weaving. I sent this to my granddaughter.

Try something like a 2-ply Harrisvile Shetland for warp with the 8 dent heddle for warp.

Be extra careful with the bulky yarn that you don't pack it too firmly and wind up with a very stiff scarf.
