What is the recipe for sodium hexametaphosphate?

What is the pH of the Ohio River water you use?

My water has a high pH, 7.6-8.  I add some sodium hexametaphosphate, stir and wait a moment and and the water turns cloudy. Then I add some more and see if it gets cloudier, if not I have enough.  If I measured the total amount I added the second time I can add that amount.

It is a non-interferring water softner, so amounts can be approximate.  The cloudiness should clear up when you adjust the pH.
