To skein or not to skein is the question?

I have been asked if I sell my unwaxed Georgia natural cotton in skeins (hanks). At this time the answer is no. So my question to you is, is there enough demand for skeins for me to spend over $1,000 to purchase winding equipment? I would charge $2 a skein over the cost of the yarn to wind skeins. At this rate I would have to wind 700 skeins just to cover the cost of the equipment.

I will still be selling yarn on cones. But making skeins for people that want to dye yarn.

Hi Michael,

That is a very large investment in equipment.  I love my GA yarn, but I use it very slowly because it takes me so long to dye it.  If it were available in hanks for dyeing, even if another $2 per hank, I would probably buy it that way.  But I am a low through-put weaver.

Thanks for your input.

I prefer to skein my own yarn.  I can wind a skein 72"x300 revolutions in about a half hour on my antique skein winder.

Thanks everyone for your input. What I was looking at was a industrial winder with an auto cut off and multi heads. After hearing from 100s of people from a mess email mailing and posting here and on Ravelry I will not be getting into the skein winding business. I will still be doing tubes for weavers that want to do sectional beaming.
