Hi,

I am a new weaver and am having trouble with making a simple warp. When I have gone through all of the steps and I do my first beat, the yarn does not straighten, instead I am left with the same huge gaps it started with. I feel like maybe my yarn is too thin, but I don't think that should matter. Is there something obvious that I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Anna

It is not terrible what you show.

1. Next time use smaller groups of thread for your lashing.

2. Crank up the tension a bit and insert 2 or 3 "sticks" of cardboard (pizza cartons work well) and use them as the initial weft shots - they will spread your warp.

After a few inches all will be well.

Take out what you have done, then weave 3 picks on alternating sheds without beating.  Now beat all 3 picks together.  This should begin to fill in your gaps.  Do this twice, and hopefully you will be ready to weave.

Your yarn does look a little skimpy for your reed.  If you wind your warp around a ruler, you should get twice as many wraps per inch as you have dents per inch - just a very, very general rule for plain weave.

  Hi,

My new loom is a parallel countermarch with 16 treadles.  Must I have all the treadles tied up to weave an 8 shaft pattern?  I enjoy the ease of treadling on my glimakra where I only tie up the treadles that I need.  This is a Mountain Loom (floor model) which is no longer in business.  They still have a working number however, there is no info about this loom.

Header. The yarn to separate the threads evenly before you weave can be a thicker yarn than you are going to use for your project. A different color also makes it easy to see. When you are finished you want it easy to pull out.

As I am also a beginner with a rigid heddle, I like Sara's suggestion of using cardboard strips.

Good Afternoon,

I just got my  RH yesterday and after work yesterday, I was eager to get it set up and do my first piece.  I stopped at 12:30 a.m. last night and the above picture is similar to what happened to me.  So, I am going to try and fix this when I get home today.  Taking your advice Sarah.
