I am thinking about going to Rhinebeck (Dutchess County Fair) in NY onSaturday  October 16th.  Is anyone else going?  How about meeting up somewhere.  I'm not very familiar with the layout but would love to meet of Weavo members.  The info is here

Hey, were you reading my mind?! We were talking about it this weekend past. We have a small group who are thinking about heading up from the NJ/Metro NYC area.

Where and when?

crosstownshuttler (not verified)

I'm in as long as I'm not working. Some of my NYC guild mates are planning to go also.

Let's see if we can figure out a time and place to meet on Saturday.

Saturday sounds good to me. Just name the time & place.

sally orgren

Saturday is probably a best bet for me too. My hubster always says it rains when I attend Rhinebeck. (I haven't gone the last few years. So has it rained?)

MaryMartha

Just realized that I could take the train from DC to Rhinecliff, which the festival site says is a 5 minute cab ride away.  So are there floor looms at Rhinebeck?  There really aren't many looms to see/try out at MD sheep and wool, and except for Mannings, there are no major showrooms in my region (defined as within a 6 hour drive).

sally orgren

I haven't been in a few years, but it didn't seem to me like many floor looms have been present in the past.

Rhinebeck is mostly about the animals and yarns, and a MAFA meeting. Unlike Maryland (which is free), Rhinebeck (not Rhinecliff) charges about $10 per day for entry. A LOT of NYC foot traffic, a LOT of knitters. Maryland still felt like a country fair to me, this event feels a little more like a craft festvial. I hope if someone has attended within the last few years, they can weigh in.

Convergence is the only event I know where you can see all the floor looms currently being manufactured.

debmcclintock

To me it is a morph of Maryland Sheep and Wool, Stitches with New England vendors thrown into the mix.  There are beautiful yarns for sale for both knitters and weavers.  There are weaving tools.  Not so many looms.  There is a limited overlap of vendors from MSW but not many, you get to see more vendors from the NE part of the US.  The color palette is different and there are more finished products.  (I think that is a result of being so close to NYC but not too close) It is worth the drive and the entry fee to see the mix.  If you are a first time person also make sure you make the tasting building, which is huge.  All the northeast wineries, cheeses and other yums are there and you can get tastings or buy to your heart's content.  If you have been there you will know that standing in the artichoke line is well worth the wait.  Rhinebeck is also for people watching since the fall foliage is starting, temperatures are down and people have their handspun, handknit on in great glory.  Keep an ear out for the fiddler contest.  There are some young fiddlers that are amazing and it is a nice sit down while you get ready to tackle more buildings.  It can easily be done in one day with a forced march thru all the buildings and displays.  There are also 2 day passes.  Book a hotel/motel/campground early.  They do fill up quickly.  I will miss this year and and I am sad.  Enjoy  Deb Mc

ps, forgot to mention that the area guild has a wonderful competition each year and the sheep to shawl contest is glorious with all types of costumes and themes.  Check their schedule on line to plan your targets

The Amtrak goes to Rhinecliff.  The festival organizers say this is a 5 minute taxi ride away, so it must be a nearby town.

Weavolution will be holding a Meetup on Saturday.  I'm working on where.  It will be from 12-2pm.  Trying to find where MAFA is going to be and where is building 34.

Ideas, suggestions, help all greatly appreciated.

Weavolution will be meeting on Saturday, 10/16 at 12-2pm at Area 13.  If the weather is bad, we will move into Building E.

The Secret Plan for "Area Thirteen"...

If it's sunny, I am planning to bring a blanket or two to share, and the famous (or infamous!) traveling inkle that you may have seen on the thread "My Corner of the World".

I am also considering bringing the Mighty Metal Monster (8" Structo) warped for Monk's Belt, as our guild is doing a round robin in November, and we are also doing a goodie bag item for next summer's MAFA workshop weekend. (I'll even let you throw a pick or two if you want!)

Consider bringing your rigid heddle and join the fun! And yes, I'll have my drop spinning in my "Happy Bag" (as Daryl Lancaster calls it) but I figure there will be plenty of spinners and knitters present to demo that activity. What makes us unusual is that we are WEAVERS—Woo Hoo!

Sally

P.S. I'll probably affix my avatar to something so you know who I am. Consider doing the same when you come! As visual people, I noticed we might not remember a name, but we do pretty well with remembering a great image or project post!

sally orgren

Okay, the box of Weavolution merch from Claudia arrived, so I am ready for the crowds who want cool Weavo stuff!

Also, some e-mail is starting to come in about fabulous vendors. For instance, JOY Yarns are going to be in booth 27A2. One of my guildmates (who raises Icelandic sheep) is vending too, but I am unsure of her booth number. Hopefully if anyone is going to be there vending, you'll give us a heads up so we know where to find you!

Please be sure to come find us at the Weavo meetup between noon and two on Saturday, so we can spread the word and be sure to visit your booth.

Okay People!

The DAY is almost upon us! Weather looks like partly sunny (cloudy?), windy, with a high of 58 degrees.

sally orgren

If someone can bring me hot water by about 1:00 on Saturday, it will probably be much appreciated!

sally orgren

Look for the mini-Weavolution sign (if it's not too windy!) Rock is optional ; - )

msthimble

Sally the mini Weavolution sign is so cute!  I will be wearing my Weavolution T shirt and bringing TWO friends, so I am looking foward to the Day.  I have my shopping list ready.  Claudia I am so looking forward to meeting you and thanking you for your dedication to Weavolution.  See you soon!!

XO Gail & Fog

debmcclintock

should be Weavolution baseball hats or knit caps.....it's gonna be cold and windy, might want to tie your t-shirt as a stylish scarf.  Enjoy everyone, I'm missing this year!

sally orgren

Where's Laverne? We need a *giant* pick-up band (scarf sized!) with the weavo logo woven in...

Claudia Segal (not verified)

I am sorry to disappoint.  I am unable to make it this year for a long list of reasons.  I am the only admin on Weavolution these days.  Alison had back surgery at the end of August and has just learned she needs to be on total bed rest for the next 6 weeks.

I am sorry to be missing Rhinebeck but promise to do my best for next year.  I am considering making hotel reservations now as back up.

I appreciate your kind words.  It means a great deal to me especially now as I am juggling so many pieces and doing my best to keep things rolling on Weavolution.  I would be lost without good friends like Sally, and Mary who has been helping post classes and Marie who does all the FB stuff and Mary R who has been helping with help topics.  I'm not doing this alone.  It's becoming a community, as we hoped it would when we started Weavolution.

Enjoy your Meetup on Saturday.  I am there in spirit, truly.

Claudia

Ha! I will have one ready for next year and I 'll even deliver it personally!

sally orgren

...and I think the weather is going to be just fine tomorrow! It might be peek-a-boo sun and windy, but no rain (please!)

Deb, I will be specifically seeking the articoke line, and for everyone else who can't make it this year, we'll try to post some photos so you can feel like you were a part of the action!

If we missed you, let's try again next year!

And here's KrazyKrafter with her "kool" hat, woven on a rectangular, continuous-thread loom, resulting in a twill pattern when felted!

sally orgren

I took this one for Deb. (Yep. A line for most of the day!)

sally orgren

Did anyone try the deep fried pickles?

debmcclintock

Thank you, the  A line is always bad!  I think one time we had artichokes at 9am in the morning just because there was no line!  I thought about everyone there all weekend.  The pictures are great and it looks like it was cool enough there to see some wonderful wool clothing...felted, knitted and woven!  thank you!

Krazycrafter (not verified)

It is not a twill pattern but a plain tabby, but by alternating between the 2 colors I get the stripe. The Diagonal is caused by the fact it is woven from corner to corner

Claudia Segal (not verified)

What loom did you use?  I'd like to understand more about how this lovely hat is woven, is it posted in your projects?

Claudia

Krazycrafter (not verified)

I have not posted any projects, not sure how to enter the loom as it is not from any of the listed manufactors.

I used a Hideaway Homestead Modular Rectangle Loom that I bought on Etsy. They also have their own website at http://www.offgridlife.com/

I had the loom set to 20 inches by 40 inches , woven with Patons wool.

Sewn in half and then felted.

sally orgren

I know you told me the loom type about 5 times at the meet up, but never having seen or heard of it before, I didn't remember the exact title. The only thing I could think of was Carol's Hillcreek Fiber Studio and her triangular looms. She also sells retangular ones, but most folks might not be aware of that.

So if you take a light and dark color, and use them side-by-side (or alternating) as you wind your way around the nails/pegs, you get this twill-looking fabric, post-felting, correct?

debmcclintock

oops, posted to wrong forum, moved it!

Krazycrafter (not verified)

When you alternate the two colors for both the warp and the weft you get stripes. This uses the same thread for both the warp and weft as you go across the frame loom on the diagonal. You are just used to think diagonals as only being twills, but this is just woven with the continuos weave on the diagonal.

Saturday, October 15th, between 11 and 1.
NY Sheep and Wool Festival, Rhinebeck, New York.

Let's have a meet up!

I'll be there with Inky, the Structo 240, some spinning, and I'll be looking for Weavo members to come by and introduce themselves!

Claudia sent some swag, so I'll have that in tow.

(Bonus if you wear something you wove!)

BTW, if you don't already know the "weaver's handshake", this will be the place to get a live demo. See you there!

Sally

sally orgren

Look for Weavo banners!

Last year, we were among the benches and trees, near the independent food vendors. We were close the the Rav meetup (in the small field near the mini-carnival rides) but under a bit of cover from the wind and threatening skies. (Hey, let's hope for warm weather and sun THIS year!) I'll try and locate a map and post to give you an idea of where to look for us. See you soon!

Loom_a_tic (not verified)

Hey!  I get to go for my first time!  I will see if I can figure out where you are and stop in and say hello!  I am so looking forward to going!

debmcclintock

wah, can't get there this year, PLEASE enjoy the grounds and goods for me!  Deb Mc

sally orgren

I am thinking since it will be sunny, I will try to set up on the grassy area near where eveyone comes in from the huge parking area.

I'll have a Weavo banner hanging, so look for that. Can't wait to meet you, Loom_a_tic. And I will certainly miss you Deb, it was great to stay with you in Clayton this spring!

Sally

sally orgren

Here's the bird's eye view, and where the meet-up was held last year. ("Area 13" on the map illustration at the fairgrounds website.) Many reported they didn't see us at this location as we were nestled in a shady, park-like area with benches. This year we will try and be closer to the entrance near the parking area, and as it is supposed to be sunny, we'll be working on generating some vitamin D (away from the trees and shade!)

Bring a chair and a spindle, wheel, or loom and join us! If you are participating in Halloweave, be sure and speak up so we can give your group credit!

sally orgren

This is the website map, which I find a little hard to interpret because there is no north-south orientation or "street" names.

Last year we were in "Area 13". I may try for a sunny spot near the entrance from the parking, which I *think* is near "Area 12." We will be more visible if not surrounded by the food vendors and tents.

See everyone in nearly 24 hours. (Some of you are already there, taking classes or setting up your booths!)

Sally

P.S. Inky will be there!

debmcclintock

Artichokes! Someone HAS to stand in line and have the braised artichokes for me AND sample the ice wine. Oh, while you are close to it shop thru the big barn and enjoy the woven goods and equipment in there! Waaah!

sally orgren

I'm delayed in traffic. It's great weather. See everybody around noon sally

sally orgren

No, I did not get swallowed up in the swampy fields at Rhinebeck! Apparently the huge traffic delay was caused by 2/3rds of the parking area being closed due to recent rainfall. Although within 3 miles of the entrance at 10:30, it took nearly 2 hours to actually enter the fairgrounds. (That was a record — even for Rhinebeck!)

So if I missed you at 11:00, apologies. I didn't get to the area until nearly 12:20. Thankfully, Loom_a_tic and Krazycrafter found me. Loom_a_tic experienced the same delays I did, but I think Krazycrafter avoided the logjam. (Note to self: hitch your wagon to her horse next time!)

Here's the Artichoke booth Deb mentioned, when the line wasn't too bad (about 3:00).

So, was anyone else there — and if so, what did you see, do, eat, or buy?

debmcclintock

Wow, that traffic sounded bad! I don't ever remember the parking lot being unusable. What a bad start to a great event. Hope that was a once in a lifetime quirk. I had to laugh at the artichoke line photo, they got fancy and put up a traffic picket fence. Hah! Hope there were shorter lines at the fiber booths!

We went on Sunday.  Came in through the village and parked in the upper field.  No mud at all.  Sorry we missed you.  Rhinebeck is oriented mainly toward knitting, crochet, and spinning so there aren't a lot of looms there.  There are plenty of weavers selling their wares, a good selection of hardware vendors with shuttles/bobbins/etc. and at least one vendor with a variety of triangle looms and weave-its.  I did see a couple of old structo looms among the antiques dealers and there was one fellow working a 32 harness Louet Megado with a mechanical dobby in his booth that attracted quite a bit of attention.  We didn't buy much this year but love to go to see the crowds, the knitwear, and get inspired by the weaving offered for sale.  Maybe we'll see you next year!             Mrdubyah
