I'm wondering if anyone has reamed out the beater race to extend the flexibility of the placement of the reed. It appears an extra 1 1/4 inches could be gained on each end.

Thanks.

I used a drill with a Forstner bit and a chisel.

Thanks. How much did you extend the slot?

ReedGuy

A good plunge router with a fence and depth guage works good. Take shallow passes until you get to depth. Secure the work piece in a wood worker's vise or clamps.

There was no slot for the beater, and the wood is old, extremely hard live oak.  Lacking a router, the drill press worked well and was easier for me to control.

Can't get much harder than live oak for native wood. I was only mentioning the tools for the original poster. We work with what we have. :)

Some fellows I have talked with in the south, say that some of it will even sink when green. That's high specific gravity for sure.  Water is 62lb/cu foot @ 100 F , green live oak is 76, yup. :D
