bolivian warmi

Actually, the foreigners are the ones who always ask about symbolism (Sorry, I don't think I was clear when I told you that).

foreigners...do you mean people who are not Bolivian or not Australian?

bolivian warmi

Non Bolivian. What I was saying is that if your piece had been woven by a Bolivian weaver, non-Bolivians visitors would be wanting to have the meaning of all the symbols explained. It seems to be assumed by many that every motif woven by indigenous weavers here must have some kind of deep significance.

Actually I kind of like that idea.  I may think along these lines more often as I create new motifs!

Notes

This was a failed attempt at speckle background from Helen Bress book. All of the heddles are double threaded and it just didn't look right that way. As a result I had about a 5 in. wide pattern area. I didn't think itty bitty motif would really show at all against the stripes, so I made BIG bold motif's. Some are mine, several were inspired by Mary Miegs Atwater's Byways in Handweaving. None are exactly like hers and they are huge by comparison. The lady is 7 1/2 in x 3 1/2 in wide, the dog is 3 1/2 in x 3 1/2 in. They are all done in techniques I learned from Laverne Waddington. She told me that in Bolivia the other weavers would ask me what the symbols represent. This is what I came up with. Diamonds are the hardest substance know to man. This one represents the hardships we all face in life. ...Yellow Diamonds are extremely rare, as is the person who faces these hardships with grace. The next one represents being pulled in different directions and trying to stay ‘level’, and centered. The heart of course is love. We all need it. The x and the o are tradition, hugs and kisses. The person represents a holiday. She has on her best dress and hat ready for a night out on the town. The dog of course represents unconditional companionship and the last one represents chaos and is there to remind us not walk around in circles.
