Hello, I just bought a jack loom and have a couple of questions concerning my very first project. First, what would you suggest I make? Also, what size yarn? Is it better for beginners to work with thicker yarns at first? Im thinking cotton would be the best type because of the price, is this right? Lastly, what type of weave should a newbie start off with?

Select a cotton thread like 8/2 cotton.  Make the warp with a few colored stripes.  Make the stripes an even number of ends, like 8, 12 or 16 ends so that it is easy to wind and easy to plan.

Don't make a warp longer than 4 yards for 4 towels, as you want to warp your loom again soon so that you get some practice.

There are instructions for simple towels on this website:

click on yarns and weaving kits and select free patterns.

Most of all, have fun.

would you suggest using a temple? I saw in one of the patterns it suggested one?

Joanne Hall

Yes.  The 16 to 23 inch wooden temple will fit many different projects and is a good size for towels.
