I am relatively new to weaving and especially to weaving with Rayon Chenille.  Could use some advice on if I can mix a 1399 YPP yarn with a 500 YPP one.  I would like to do a warp with the 1399 and then weft of 500 YPP.  What sett should I use in order to get a good drape on the scarves?  Any advice will be appreciated!!!!

You can certainly use the two yarns together and you will have a piece with a weft emphasis since you ypp is much lower for the weft.  I use the chart in Peggy Osterkamp's book to determine sett.  I'm not sure what it is for the 1399 ypp rayon chenille but I do know you base it on the wraps per inch in the yarn that holds the chenille, not on the wpi of the yarn so your sett will be larger (20 or 22) than you might think.  You can also search on the projects in Weavolution for one that used rayon chenille or take a look at the landing page for the rayon chenille group.  Su Butler is the best person to answer this and she is usually on Weavolution once or twice a week.

I look forward to seeing pictures of your project once it's started.  Good luck and happy weaving.

Hey Two Guys and a loom......Sorry it took me a while to address this question - I was teaching at Michigan League of Handweavers conference all last week. You can use your 1399 ypp chenille as the warp, setting at least 16 epi, depending on the weave structure you intend to use. Plain weave at least 16 epi, up to about 20-24 epi. The larger chenille has a core yarn that is just a little bigger than the 1399 ypp chenille, so it will have the same effect as using a finer warp and a heavier weft. In other words, ridges. The larger chenille probably has a longer pile, so it will stick up higher than the smaller chenille. This could be good or bad, depending on what you are trying to achieve. Chenille cannot be more openly sett to achieve drape, as some other fibers can. Rayon already has fantastic drape, so sett for good quality fabric (as you really should for all yarns) and let the properties of rayon chenille create the drape for you. A scarf made of this combo will weigh approx 1 pound or more, so take that into consideration....do you really want to wear something that weighs that much around your neck?? If you are going to do any structure other than plain weave or a tied weave, you will need to incorporate a supplementary binding pick to secure the chenille in the weave structure. Hope that helps.... Su :-) The sett for rayon chenille yarn is based soley on the size of the core yarn, not wpi. The core yarn for most chenille sized 1200-2000 ypp is usually about the same as an 8/2 cotton. The core for chenille under 1200 ypp can be as large as a 6/2 cotton and for 2000-3000 ypp chenille it can be as small as a 10/2. So you sett accordingly, regardless of the pile depth and density.

Thanks Claudia and Su.... Will be anxious to get things re-warped for this batch.  Sounds like my current sett of 10 epi for the 1399 Rayon Chenille is too loose, so on the next batch I'll do the 16 epi and see what happens.  Thanks again for the advice!
