I've been a weaver forever, but know only a small handful of other weavers. I feel like I've been in a cave for twenty years and I'm blinking in the sunshine. Pleased to meet you!

I've woven on and off since I was a kid, but haven't had my loom for quite a few years, now. I just bought (last week!) a new floor loom, and am about to get back into this. Timing is perfect!

Hi I'm a New Yorker but recently retired from teaching art outside of Albany and moved to Savannah -- to avoid the nasty Upstate winters.  We are back up North on Lake Champlain for the summer and living on our sailboat, so my weaving will be limited to cardboard loom weaving this summer.  I have been weaving for over 30 years -- mostly on 4 shafts or smaller, but was excited to get a Mighty Wolf 8 shaft loom in February for my new studio.

oooh, new loom joy :)

living on a sailboat? wow that sounds just fabulous.    You might want to check out backstrap weaving - takes just as little (maybe less) room, and won't be ruined if it gets wet.

 Hi everyone,

I'm in Westchester County with too many looms and not enough time to enjoy them. Hopefully this community will inspire me.

Hello all!  My name is Shannon and I'm a weaver currently located in Wurtsboro NY, a wonderful little community:)  I currently have two looms in the studio....a Louet Megado and Lecerc Compact.  I'm too far to travel to any guild so, I hope to perhaps find other weaver's in the area!  :)

Well, I'm certainly not on the West Coast! :-) I live in NYS, about 2 blocks from lake Ontario. I have a rigid heddle loom and do 2 and 4 shaft weaving on it. I'm still on my learning curve, as I've only been doing this for 7 months, but as the moniker says, I'm a Fiber Wild Child! I also spin and knit in my free time.

Cheers,

Karen

I've been a New Yorker most of my life, from Niagara Falls to currently Jamestown, NY. I love the seasons & I'm lucky to live in an area with an active Weaving Guild - Chautauqua County Weavers Guild. I've been a member since the early 90's.

I'm not familiar with locations others are from, but there are several weaving guilds located in central NY, many are associated with MAFA and EGLFC. I can check around for some. I get such a surge of energy from guild meetings - its a wonderful place to meet people who speak the same language.

I am a new weaver, having only been weaving for a bit under a year.  I took a wonderful "woven design" class as The Fashion Institute of Technology last fall and pulled out my 4H Harrisville loom purchased for me by my husband in 1995.  I wove a few scarves back then, folded the loom together and moved to my new house 11 yrs ago.  I finally got the courage to warp it, after finishing my class at FIT.  I recently got an 8H Mighty Wolf loom and have managed to get a warp on the both looms.  One has dishtowels on it and the new loom is warped with alpaca/silk for a shawl.  I live in Brooklyn, NY and am excited to see Weavolution on the horizon.  -Catherine

I'm on Long Island, and am a wannabe weaver. I just joined this site, hoping to learn more from experienced weavers about selecting a first loom and getting started.

So fire away with any advice!

Welcome to the wonderful world of weaving!!  I've been weaving for 20 years, though it sure doesn't seem like that long!  I'm on the board of the New York Handweavers Guild - it would be great if you come to our meetings.  We meet the last Saturday of the month (beginning again in September) from noon - three at the School of Visual Arts on E. 21 St in Manhattan.  You can find us on the web at www.nyhandweavers.org

If you are free on Wednesdays I'd also recommend the wonderful weaving class at the Newark Museum that meets for 8 weeks in the Fall and Spring.  I've been going for 16 years! and ithe women in the class have become my "weaving support group."  Some of us are quite experienced but there are always some new weavers in the group.

Great to know.  I am a soon to be weaver awaiting my first RH loom.

Sweltwoman, I am a member of the Handweaver's Guild.  I only made one meeting last year and am thinking it is not a convenient time for me.  Also, classes in Newark would be a problem, since I don't drive.  I have lots of good weaving books, which I have been devouring and got a very good start at FIT last year.  For now, that will have to suffice.  Thanks for your suggestions, though.  I'll keep it all in mind.

Hi, Shannon! I know where Wurtsboro is. Although we live in NJ, we have a bungalow up in Sullivan County so we pass by Wurtsboro on Rt. 17 whenever we go up there. Any good weaving resources in your area?

I have a large basket filled with assorted yarns & thrums plus a small tapestry loom. This travels very well. The small size allows me to try ideas out faster than they would be on my larger looms.

Another idea for something to travel with is a maru dai. The braids you can create on these is wonderful. I think they even sell a cardboard circle that you can braid on - talk about travel friendly!

I started at Hayk Otaci's Oriental Rug Weaving Workshop, and I think I like it. Between the size of my apartment and my ADD, I think I will be working in sixth scale (fashion dolls, y'know.)

The Turkish loom works, as far as I can tell, like a Navajo loom. We've been using a Beka loom but warping it in a "field-expedient" fashion. I think I could do my Ashford RH the same way.

I'd love to come to a meeting in the city!

IF you're free on Thursday, 7/30 from 4:00 - 7:00 I hope you will come to my home in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn (71 Carroll St, Apt 5C) to meet two wonderful weavers from Bhutan who will be stopping by here on their way back home.  They will be showing and selling their fascinating work and talking about the role of weaving in daily life in Bhutan.
