I have a number of older Scandinavian weaving books (and am always looking for more with drafts) and many projects call for 'Lingarn Nr.12' which has me a bit flummoxed. The one I am looking at now calls for 20/2 cotton in the warp and #12 linen yarn in the weft. Another frequently mentioned size is #20. This particular book was published in 1973. Is there any sort of standard for linen or conversion chart around? I'd also welcome suggestions for the linen warp in the project I mentioned. Thanks!

Linen is traditionally numbered in leas (300 yard skeins) per pound.

If a single, just one number is used - so #12 linen is 12 300 yard leas per pound - or 3600 yards per pound.

#16 is 4800 ypp.

16/2 - being plied is 4800/2 or 2400 ypp.

This measurement for linen yarn is included in just about every weaving text that addresses yarn numbering convensions.

A #16 linen would approximate the 20/2 cotton in a warp.

Thanks Sara. That cleared up my confusion beautifully.
