Hi Tapestry Weavers!  I thought it would be a good idea to bat around some ideas of what we want this study group to be before the beginning of February 1 st.

Since their are 20 members we may want to do different things within this group ! That's fine. Some people may want to study color, design, tapestry diary, joins, do a sampler from a book.  We might decide as a group to do a design and complete a small tapestry over, let's say 2-3 months  time .

I am very interested in what you want to do!

Let's Talk!

P.S. It's not too late to join:)

Turned out to be a failure.   Some of the transition areas were okay but others were not and some of the shapes were terrible.   I also had an issue with a fraying warp end, so I cut off this morning and tied on again.  I have something else in mind so we shall see.

Watch those magnets, they are wickedly strong, just latched on to one of my tapestry forks:-)

That's dissapointing About the transparencies, theresasc ! Experimenting is great though. If it's a weave fail, one usually learns something to go forward. If it turns out great, it turns out really great:)

I'll take heed with the magnets,lol !

I got the loom all tied up today, YAY! Now just even out the tension abit, put in a few rows, space, header, twine, half hitch, weave! I figure about 3-4 hrs more.

i have beendelinquent about photos:( soon!

Hi, I am new to this group. I have a counterbalance loom from Mario Vucetich in Buenos Aires, which is not sturdy enough for tapestry. I have a weaving frame I use for practising and am setting up a Toika countermarch which I bought used. I have not used it yet, as I find the tie-up rather daunting. I am now living in France, and have taken a tapestry workshop from France-Odille Perrin Crinière in Aubusson, the capital of tapestry in France. I have not started on my own, but am spinning up a storm to do my first rug South-American style. The ones I brought with me are getting worn.

Welcome to the tapestry study group Gerdah! How very exciting that you are now living in Aubusson ; I imagine there will be lots of opportunity to continue learning tapestry there ! Plus beautiful yarns.

There are quite a few Weavolution members with Toika looms. It might be helpful to put out a general question about the tie-up on the main discussion board to see if someone can give you advice, if you want.

please send pictures of your progress. Glad to have you here!

sorry for the double post:(

O.K> the patagonia cartoon is still not completely resolved. I started this week to start drawing rocks on the lefthand side in values to see how they look. the idea was I would surround them with very subtle pick and pick to look like pebbles. there are alot of things wrong with these ideas which I"m going to list if you"re interested.

1 The whole piece is flowing, the rocks are static, they stop the motion, to me they look out of place.

2 the rocks would have most probably been hachure, which moves the color from side to side along the fell, while pick and pick moves color up the warp. What I would get would be opposing stripes, also stopping motion.

I have decided to do is break the area into more areas of gentle curves and use hachure and soumac.

Two of the buzz words for this piece are "cold" and "wind". I had planned to use all cold colors, cold blues, cold greys, etc. However, now I feel if I do that I will end up with a piece that has no depth, very flat. So now, I am going to place in my weft bundles some warmer greys and deep browns etc.

I whited out a lot of the wave action in the water and will probably more, because I thougt the water looked like it was moving too fast. Those marks will be some color, but will be mostly soumac to show the wind.

If anyone has suggestions about the foreground of the tapestry I would love to hear it! The only other thing about that area is I want to keep it one of the medium to dark value areas because it's stone and pebble made up of the same material as the mountain. The mountain will be slightly lighter because it's further away. however pretty shiney(windblown) mineral highlights could appear in the hachure of the foreground too.

I'll start weaving this a.m., I actually have butterflies in my stomach I'm so excited ! I'm going to sew the cartoon on the first time to make sure it's absolutely square, then hop done to HD and get some magnets later when I need them :)

see you later, it starts now:)

Cathie

P.S. By all means, it's not too late to make suggestions! I can probably incorporate them, it's a large area !

theresasc

for you, Cathie!  I know you have had this tapestry in the works for a while.   I like watching your process,  it is really informative.

I see what you mean about weaving actual stones, I think that the curves and color will convey your intention well.

Happy Weaving!

As I said earlier, I cut off the last transparency and tied back on.  I have a number of African Violets that are blooming right now and I have some yarn that is fairly close in color, so I am trying my hand at weaving a flower.  So far it seems to be working okay.

African Violet

I also order a sample card from Weaving Southwest of their 2-ply tapestry yarn.  It came in the mail yesterday and the colors are just lovely!  I think that the yarn itself is a bit heavier than what I have in mind to use but boy, are the colors fabulous!

Hi theresasc,

Thanks for your vote of confidence in the decisions about the tapestry, nice to hear from other tap. weavers:)

The  African Violet is off to a great start! I like the highlighting on the leaves, also the white background. What size is it going to be?

How much warp did you put on your loom this time? I put 7 yards on, first time warping the loom, what a mess,  lol ! I thought I could get several tapestries off that warp, now I'm determined too !

I think the yarns from Weaving Southwest are gorgeous too! Beautiful dye work , the colors are just rich. I've never worked with them ,though I'm sure they're fabulous , because I like to work with pretty fine yarns.

I had a good day today put in some hours at the loom :)

It's so great to hear what others are doing ! If anyone is taking workshops , I'm sure people would like to hear about those too.

I 'm planning to start a new thread for March, still Tapestry Study Group, you'll automatically be a member, we'll keep talking and making tapestry!

3 yard warp on the loom when I dressed it.  This warp is 12/9 cotton seine twine.  I have both 12/9 and 12/6 in my stash, why both, I have no idea - LOL.  I am finding that I with the various wools that I have been weaving with that in prefer the 12/6 warp.  I am using Australian rug wool (approx. 375 yards/250 gram) and Harrisville Shetland for the tapestry I am working on now.  I am using a single strand of the rug wool and 2 strands of the Harrisville.  The white background wool is a giant cone of mystery yarn that I do not even remember buying.  It is a little bit smaller grist and softer than the rug wool but is working okay.  This is why I have to get my stash under control, so many disjointed yarns that are hard to bring together, yet I keep looking at sources for tapestry yarn.  I just have to face the fact that I am a yarn junkie.

The warp is sett at 8 epi and is 9 inches wide and I am hoping to weave the African Violet tapestry a square 9" x 9" - at least that is the game plan.

So what is on everyone else's looms?  Sometimes I feel that I am dominating this conversation.  What loom are you using?  What warp?  What weft?  Do you prefer butterflies or bobbins?

I re-read this post after hitting send and dratted "auto-correct" on Android does not understand weaving terminology - changed "sett" to setting and "epi" to episode.  I have enough trouble spelling on my own that I just do not need that kind of helpWink

The tapestry loom has become the sitting room loom, this is a good sign! :)

Here is today's progress, you can also see earlier attempts, which I suppose disprove my prior comments that I haven't really woven tapestry. I have woven a bit of tapestry, but the vast majority of it is still on the loom! :)

I am looking forward to seeing Patagonia in the works. It has been fun to watch the creative process you have been going through on this.

Thanks, Tina ! Patagonia has been a long time coming !

Oh, yes Erica, this is a very good sign:)

see you all tomorrow,

Yes, for those who asked those are earth magnets.  Strong little buggers and hurt like heck when snapping on fingers but they hold the cartoon to the weaving like crazy.

Theresasc - are you from Racine, WI if so we know each other!  Im Jeanne - You were a great inspiration to me starting to tapestry weave as well as the 4 other looms that currently live in my house!

For some reason I keep getting double posts!  sorry.  learning this format here!

Talk about a few blood blisters on my fingers from them!

Ladymyzt and Theresasc , if you two know each other , that would be so cool !

lol, in my eagerness to be a good " admin" I started the new thread a day early , thinking today was March 1 st ! I guess when you're on your first cup of coffee anything goes :)

Yes Jeanne, it is me!  I am glad to see that you are still weaving and aquiring looms:-)  You have developed fabulous tapestry skills, really well done.  We still get together once a month.

Yesterday morning I wove a bunch and then yesterday afternoon I removed most of it.  I forgot that little thing about tapestry - you sometimes unweave as much as weave.  Amazing how different the piece looks when you walk away for a bit and come back to it.

Erica - nice to hear that the tapestry loom is now the sitting room loom.  That is good!

Learned so much with this first tapestry.  Clearly need to work on circles (probably at a closer sett).  Especially enjoyed getting textural effects with handspun.  Do like the Glimarkra tapestry loom!

The group is still here. It looks like it has been a while since the current members have posted. However, if you are interested in a Tapestry Study Group, I suggest you start a new post and see who else might be interested in utilizing the resources here and engaging in a new conversation! Let me know and I will happily share this on our FB page. :)
