I'm trying to build my own spool winder and could use your expertise.  While I understand how it's supposed to work, I'm at a loss as to the name of the parts I should buy.  Building mechanical things are not my expertise!

I bought a sewing machine motor, can I just attach the shaft to it?  I assume I should get a rod that fits snugly in there, one that I'll probably have to hammer in.  Or do I need a collar or some other part?

The end of the shaft that is attached to the block of wood, what's in the block of wood?  Is it a needle roller bearing?  I know I need something in the wood so that when the rod spins, it doesn't create a lot of friction and heat, but I'm not sure what they're called.

Hi heyxu. Assuming your motor has a 1/4" shaft you will need a 1/4" shaft coupler. This can be purchased on-line at: http://www.surplussales.com. The bearing installed in my block is a 1/4" Router bearing, and can be purchased at most hardware stores. You may also need tapered drive centering points to hold your spools. Mine are of aluminum purchased on ebay, however they are no longer available. A 1/4" shaft tapered grinding stone (cone shaped stone), as used on a small die grinding tool, dipped in some liquid rubber as used for hand tool grips would make good center points. The dead end ( the wooden block with the bearing) and center point will need to slide in, or out to load your spool. The motor will need to be used with a speed controller (sewing machine foot switch). I purchased one on ebay. Hope this helps, Frank.

Nice work!  Your woodworking is top flight.  Mine tends to be more crude.  It works, but I'm not posting pictures of it.  I'm usually in a hurry to solve a problem and don't take the time to make it pretty.  I'm going to start making some shuttles soon, so I guess I'll get the chance to change that.  Thanks for the great pictures!

Good luck with your latest project!,Frank

Thanks so much!  That helps a lot, I was also able to get a sewing machine motor with a speed controller (the foot).  And it is a 1/4" shaft, I'll definitely be looking for those parts you mentioned and post a picture once I've built my own.  Thanks again!
