Great idea - not just for computer looms, either.

I read the original post on the other forum but am having trouble visualizing how to do this.  Would someone mind breaking down the steps a bit?  Especially for a non-computerized loom?  Thanks, Liese

Hi Little, basically Tien is using her loom to lift her threads so that she captures the same # of threads in her hem stitch.  So if you have a hand loom you just don't have the computer to lift your threads. If you look at the jpg below:

chestofbooks.com/crafts/needlework/Lessons-Art-Practice/images/Fig-60-A-Hemstitching.jpg

this drawing obviously is of a ready made cloth not on the loom but the purpose is to show the thread groupings, next time I'm at my loom I'll snap a loom shot.

you'll see that they are picking up 4 threads in their hem stitch.  So you want to be able to pick up 4 threads with your needle.  If you are working with a large warp thread from 8 epi up to about 24 epi you can probably see your threads to count.  If you start getting up to 30 - 50 epi it is tough to see the threads (Tien works with fine threads)

On a manual loom, on a straight draw (1,2,3,4) you could:

  1. Just lift treadle 1, that will show you where each group of 4 starts
  2. use a thin pick up stick to pick up every other 4 threads, let your treadle down
  3. push the pick up stick back towards the reed, keeping it flat
  4. use the visual effect of the pick up stick on the warp threads to see the groups hem stitch
  5. when your hem stitching is done, pull the pick up stick out...it's a transient tool

The loom and how you treadle it is just a tool to help you do your finish work.  Hope this helps  regards  Deb

Thanks Deb.  Since I wrote that questions I've thought it thru more and now I "think"  that using the tabby treadles might also be a way gathering the thread bundles for hemstitching on fine threads.  I'll put my theaory to the test later ...right now I'm warping for chenille scarves as I try to build up my show stock.  No rest for the wicked .....Liese

This  works  for shadow weave threadings too in that by using tabby b treadle I was able to get distinct little sections that were appropriate for the hemstitching.  I just treadled thru evaluating which tie up looked the most uniform and properly sectioned.  Liese
