Hello! i just finished my 2nd scarf on the Ashford SampleIt Loom using a 7.5 (30/10) dpi heddle. I used a lovely yarn- Malabrigo Rios 210 yards, pure Merino superwash 100 gm skein. My instructor helped me calculate yardage, we started with a 60 " warp by 6 " wide and i was left with 70 yds of yarn leftover. I was making this scarf for a petite person as a special gift. I was not aware to calculate the 10% shrinkage and have just taken it off the loom. Prewashed it measures 5 1/2" wide by 36" long without fringe. I am thinking I should start over but unsure of how to make it longer and not run out of yarn. I don't understand all the information to be filled out on the Yarn Calculator. Can anyone help me?

Calculating yarn for a warp is NOT done in inches, but yards or meters.

If you have 60 threads, each yard of warp will need 60 yards of yarn. Add 10% for takeup. Add another 10% for shrinkage. Add half to three-quarters of a yard for loom waste. If you are a newbie, add another half a yard for experiments or errors.

NOW, consider that according to FTC legalities, yarn measurements can vary by + /-10% due to tension on the yarn and humidity, etc.

When warping a loom, don't skimp.

Recommmended project length 72" (a 60" scarf to begin is very short.)

Project width 6"

Your dent (sett) is 10 per inch? 6" X 10 = 60 warps

Loom waste front & back (let's say 3/4 yd) 24"

Take up & shrinkage (20%) of 72" (the woven area only) = 14"

1 warp = 72+24+14" = 216, about 3 yards, x 60 warps = 180 yards for just the WARP. The weft will need about the same amount (actually a bit less), but this gets you in the ball park.

If you want to use the same yarn you mentioned earlier, that comes packaged at 210 yards per skein, you'll need one skein for the warp, another for the weft.

What you have left, (70 yards) is not enough.

P.S. I just gave you the fish, but Sara is good at pointing out how to fish ;-)

You ladies are kind, informative and brilliant!  So many thanks!!

Hello again. When you gave the example of 72" scarf length does that include the fringe or rather 72" of woven scarf and then I add on the fringe length to my measurements? Thanks!!

Hello again!

i was just reviewing my notes as I wrote out your through answer on this yarn calculation subject. Here's the thing: you indicated 1 warp= 72 & 24 &14 to equal 216" or about 3 yards. However it adds up to 110". Am I supposed to double this number perhaps because 1 warp thread winds around the warping post and returns to the back warp stick? Wanting to double check. Many thanks Laura

I think it was just a typo. Tge math adds up tp 110", which is about 3 yards.

Unless your bout tie-ons are very short, they should be enough for your fringe. Untie them, don't cut them off. Just make sure that you have enough "loom waste" in front and back for the length of fringe you want. And when you cut off the warp in back, be sure to cut far enough back for long enough ends. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why fringe was invented: to use up loom waste. ;->. And to help secure the ends, though many fabrics also benefit by hemming in addition.

If you're doing twisted fringe, make sure to allow a little more length for that. Do a few practice ones before warping, to see how long your ends have to be for the amount of twist you're using, amd attaining the desires length. But unless you want really long fringe, 6-8" ends should be plenty.

you stated your friend is petite why not tell her what you did and let her try on the scarf. If in fact it is too short you can when redo it. Some people like a short scarf.

I was sleeping at the wheel – and thanks to Erica for pointing out my bad math. Not sure where my head was at that day!

So actually, if all that is needed is 110 yards for 1 scarf, and the fringe comes from the front end tie-on and the loom waste at the back, one skein (at 216 yards) would weave 1 scarf, both warp & weft.

You'll need slightly less yarn for weft, since you won't be weaving the whole warp length, just 72" (desired length of finished scarf) + 14" (take up and shrinkage) = 86" (someone please check my math Smile)

That's a great idea! It could also be done to make an extra long fringe. That scarf was a Christmas present and turned out lovely. Thank you!
