Hi,

I'm trying to teach myself Inkle weaving. I have a homemade Inkle loom and have warped it with #10 crochet thread. I can't seem to be able to beat the weft down enough to make it disappear. I've tried to tighten and loosen the warp and nothing seems to work. Any clues as to what am I might be doing wrong?

I even tried using the back of a table knife to beat this!

Appreciate any ideas,

Respectfully,

After you place the weft in place you can beat it but it always bouces back up because there is nothing to hold it in place . So then you open the next shed and beat strongly, it will make a thwack sound, and now it will stay in place.

It is hard at the start, too, because there is nothing to push against.  Sometimes I put some sturdy cardboard in the the 1st shed  and then start weaving.  It gives me something to beat against in the begining and is easy to remove once everyting is looking good.

You might try the darker color as the weft, you'll probably like how it looks better.

Try making the width just a bit narrower.  Pull on the weft a little to pull in the sides.  Then weave two inches and decide how wide you want it to be.

Apart from pulling the weft a little bit more to get the warp threads lying closer together, a thinner weft might also help. If you use a thread in the same colour as the outermost threads, it will be nearly invisible.
