Hello all- I will visiting Oaxaca Dec 31/10 for two weeks, with a friend. We are both weavers/spinners,dyers,knitters and are interested in making connections while we are there. I understand there is lots (fibre-related) to see and do in Oaxaca and surrounding villages. Any special highlights or recommendations from fellow travellers? All suggestions and ideas much appreciated-thanks in advance.

I spent time around Oaxaca in 1981 and 1973. I hope there is still plenty of weaving and embroidery around there! Teotitlan del Valle is famous for woven blankets and rugs and you could spend hours walking around this village. Many people spun their own yarn and dyed it when I was there. Their products are sold in many places but it is fun to see the looms, spinning wheels, homes, and meet the people.

There is another village which specializes in woven bands and belts. You might ask Laverne Waddington about this. I bought several belts for very low cost. Near the belt village we bought embroidered dresses which were popularly known as Mexican wedding dresses. The embroidery is extensive and beautiful.

Don't miss the ruins or the delicious food in this area!  Also I bought beautiful handmade decorated leather sandals in the market in Oaxaca.  If you head south into Chiapas, there are different textiles there, and you might see some of those in the markets around Oaxaca.

We had a family reunion in Oaxaca and loved it.
