I just got some mill end white acrylic chenille with the intent of making a painted warp. I'm having a hard time finding information on dying this material, and wonder if a painted warp with this material is possible. Does anyone have any experience dying acrylic chenille?

Hi BWSD,

I was ordering some dyes and saw this page and thought it might help in your search

http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/how_to_dye_acrylic.shtml

I have no experience with acrylic but do like jacquard products, so perhaps the one they recommend on the site will work. Good luck, Cathie

I saw this text, but it's not very useful.  It makes using toxic chemicals (which many dye mordants are) as scary things you shoud avoid.  if you protect yourself and your kitchen properly, they are safe.  I have not been able to find basic dyes (which will dye acrylic) in smaller quantities than $30 per color; I was hoping to find a more affordable source.

Have you considered natural dyes?  Carol Leigh's Specialities (Hillcreek) sells and uses all mordants and sells small quantities of natural dyes and dyeing aids.  I have never dyed acrylic before, but Carol Leigh is a dyeing expert and may be able to help you with your question.

Those basic dyes are something for industrial use and not home dyeing. That is why you are not finding smaller quantities.

Basic dyes are available from Dharma Trading, which sells dyes and supplies for home dying.  They offer them in $30 per color quantities and say that they will be  offering them in smaller quantities in the future, but don't say when.  I was hoping for an alternative, but it looks like unless Dharma changes their pricing, I'll be using this white.

rit dyemore is a dye made for acrylic fabric and yarn. i have used it. they will make a recipe for you if you don't find the color that you want to make in the basic dyes. if you experiment with it first you might be happy.
