Nice looking weave. You didn`t tell us how long, how wide you made this piece. I have referred to that source a few times and have found some small inconsistancies from what she lists and what is shown on Scottish Register of Tartans.

ReedGuy

At one time we thought Lindsay and Crawford were the same, but according to her book there is no white and the sett (color pattern) is different. Lindsay has some blue. What may be at play with the blue is the crossing of the warp and weft (red and green make blue) may have a visual affect. Also, I found out from the net, that some tartans have changed over time. This one from what I found is the original from the beginning, there is a more "modern" design as well. This is the pattern that I am familiar with. It's on a scarf from Scotland and a crest we have. From what my folks recall, the white was actually yellow or gold at one time.

This piece was 242 ends wide (30") @ 8 epi.in the reed and 36" long. Washed and shrunk to 25" x 30". Sleyed the heddles and reed Friday July 13th and wove it on Saturday July 14th.

Thanks

I like it, it definitely has a lustre, visible even in the photos. Very nice. I am going into weaving specificaly to produce tartan for kilts.

You mention that you went with 8epi, since I imagine that the acryllic yarn is thicker than the 18/2 wool yarn. I see some people making kilts from acrylic tartan, is it comparable to 16oz weight wool?

What I used is comparable to 100 % two ply wool yarn (215 yards, 4 oz skein). Got it at Walmart. It seems it's mostly what department stores sell, acrylic I mean. It actually costs more than wool locally. I know of someone using the wool, but it is probably single ply she uses. She makes the tartan kilts and such. This particular weave was a sampler. I'm going to be weaving single ply wool scarves in the tartan. 430 yards, 4 oz skeins, sett 16 epi. Going to try it anyway. But, I doubt I could beat it any tighter with this yarn. Wool feels better than acrylic to me, softer.

Eileen Crawford

How do you think Jagerspun Zephyr would work for the fabric?  I intend to make fabric for scarves for my family, and perhaps some yardage for sewing.

ReedGuy

I've never tried it Eileen. Are you thinking of 18/2? Sample I guess.
