Hi there, I am new to weaving (so please be gentle!) and am currently working on my first project.  Can anyone tell me what the above pattern is called.  The material is Harris Tweed in a twill weave.  I am very familar with Harris Tweed and use it alot in my sewing working and am looking to create something similar in terms of the pattern and wondered if it has an actual name (I am familar with houndstooth, herringbone etc).  Also is it a complicated design to achieve? I have bought a couple of Janet Philips books which I am waiting to arrive but thought I would get researching!!

From here it looks like a miniature postage stamp!

while I have no idea what the "name" is (if it has a name), the way to find out how to weave it is to make "colour analysis". You say it is a Harris tweed, therefore it is probably an ordinary 2/2 twill - ad therefore the pattern is just in the colour order.

On my blog (here and here) I have analyzed a couple of tweed jackets (one of which is not a 2/2 twill) - maybe that wil help you to get started. It is very helpful to have some weaving software - using graph paper is perfectly possible, but it is all too easy to make mistakes when using 3-4-5 coloured pencils... Most software have demo versions, which lets you to use but not save - these, too, can help you get started.

Edit: oops - should have said "is not a straight 2/2 twill" above - it is a broken 2/2 twill...

Your blog is really useful, thank you so much!  Can I ask you another question, being from Sweden have you come accross/ know much about Lillstina floor Looms?

Handwoven has an article in the current issue by Robyn Spady (West Coast, US) on analyzing fabric to determine how it was woven. Inga Dam (Canada) also gives an excellent mini-workshop on developing this skill.

A general guess from the somewhat blurry photo is a twill with color effects, meaning color changes in the warp and weft. You might want to check out the Handweaver's Pattern Directory by Anne Dixon (UK) for ideas on how this is done if you are unsure.

Good luck!

It's mighty hard to see in your photo, but it looks to me like a 2/2 twill with color shifts in both warp and weft.  Here's a quick fake I made in DBweave:
