I just purchased a used Brittany Tapestry Loom and have never done weaving before.  The lack of instructions make it double difficult!  Apparently the company is no longer in business?  I need an instruction manual on how to set up and use the loom please.  Can anyone help me?

I found the info that I have on the herran site (On-line Spinning and Weaving Guild mentioned above.  I have some other stuff from another weaver, but what I was really looking for was a description on the one part missing on my loom.  I'll be glad to mail you what I have that is not part of the OSWG post, especially if you have the part I'm missing and can give me the dimensions.  Contact my via weavo private message and we'll work it out.

It sounded like a wonderful idea but Im begining to regret it now. It seems that this loom is a mystery and I can not find any thing on it. Its assembled now but I have no idea how to use it> I was hoping for a video instruction but have not found any thing on it. Do you know why there is so little information on this type of loom ?

There isn't much on-line because it's an old loom.  Look up info on rolling heddle looms.  I think Good Wood and others have made these recently.

Yes, it's frustrating when there's a loom and no instructions, especially when the company that once made the loom isn't in business any longer. I am a tapestry weaver but haven't used a Brittany loom but have seen photos online. Seems that it could be used as a simple frame loom--in fact, a friend who's also a tapestry weaver recently purchased a Brittany loom and she's mentioned on a tapestry listserve she's using it without the shed/heddle device. Any frame loom can be used that way for tapestry, with the weaver "picking" the warps with the fingers to insert the weft. Good luck with finding a way to make this loom work for you. Tommye

Since the assembly and instructions cited above don't seem to have been satisfactory, perhaps what you're actually looking for is basic instructions for tapestry weaving?  If so, try downloading the free E-book available from Weaving today at:

I recently acquired an old Brittany loom.  It is mostly complete, I think, lacking only some pegs. It includes a tensioner: a separate piece of wood, grooved, that fits (via a peg and hole arrangement) above of the frame.  The tensioner has 2 large wooden screws that move it up and down relative to the top of the frame. Unlike other photos I've seen online, this loom's tensioner appears to sit at the top of the loom. This loom has no side pegs. The instructions I see online for advancing the warp make no sense to me for this or any other model.

I have not warped the loom yet, so I'm not very knowledgeable. Still, if someone would like a photo of my loom, or dimensions, I'm happy to send them along.
