I have looked and looked at this site and mostly I love it but asking a simple question is harder than it should be. I am going to try this group and hope it works.

Questions.

what are pics? number of rows wove? if it were stitches would not that be the same as epi?

Question. Reccomendation for best book for a beginner.

Thanks

I consider a pic to be a shot of weft that is drawn across the web with a shuttle through the open shed. (how's that for plain english?)

EPI = ends per inch (warp threads)

PPI = pics per inch (weft thread)

So your assumption is correct. If you're creating a balanced tabby weave of say 12 ends per inch warp-wise, you would have 12 pics per 1 inch of weaving weft-wise.

There are a number of new weaving books on the market that are for beginners. I like Peggy Osterkamps beginning book (newest).

Ok that is a very good explaination and easy to understand. I am trying to get all the words down but every time I think I have it I come across another that stumps me.

I'll check out that book. I have checked out about 10 books so far but most are way over my head.

Thanks Again

Weaving has many very old, odd words - eventually you'll speak them easily, similar to learning a new language - when you speak about weaving, people who don't weave, may zone out!

I think all hobbies/vocations have their own vocabulary. I am a potter and that too has words you almost never hear anywhere else. Like kiln and grog and slip not the kind you wear. Learning that vocabulary is a large part of learning the hobby or art but for some reason weaving does seam to have more then their share.

Ok I am off to market to sell eggs and squash and maybe some other stuff. Have a great day everyone.

Marlene Have you seen the online classes? Mary rios who wrote above, does private online classes for beginners. You would learn the most doing that as opposed to asking each word. Mary is a patient, kind, thorough teacher. Try sending her a message. Claudia

Claudia I would love to take a class or two but I do not have the funding at this time. My income and my medical needs do not match up and I am trying very hard to stay out of too much debt. Being retired I am on a limited income but the cost of living go up all the time while the income does not. My weaving has to be done without any extra outgo.

But the good news is I sold a rug today at market so I can get next months Rx. At least one of them.

Thanks for the help and ideas.I try reading more.
