Hi there,

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get these shaft rods from?  From what people have kindly told me they are not an original part of my Lillstina loom and therefore not essential, however just in case I have any difficulty once I got weaving, I wondered if anyone had any idea where I cound get these from.  I am based in the UK.

Ah!   From your desctription, I wasn't thinking about something like this at all.   A picture is always better.  This would be more difficult to make than what I was thinking it was.

But here is an idea:  Get a piece of wood dowel with a length equal to the distance between the shaft pieces, and with a diameter no larger than the thickness of the shaft pieces.   Drive a small finishing nail into each end of the dowel.   Then drill a small hole into the underside of the top shaft piece, and into the top side of the bottom stafts piece.   The holes are for the nails to fit into.

Put this piece of wood into place and tie a strong string around both shaft pieces to keep them pressed together onto the dowel.  The nails will hold them in place.  Now you have something is works much the same as your missing metal piece.  A metal rod, with similarily drilled holes, and a string, would also work.

But if it's not original equipment, it's unclear why you need these pieces. . . .

Thanks!  In terms of why I would like the rods is just because its seems to hold the bars more rigid.  I have seen pictures of another Lillstina with them too.   I believe the loom was originally owned by a weaving tutor at the Galasheils Art College, Scotland so my thinking is that she made the adjustment to help with the weaving process.  Its just a shame to have one missing part when it seems to hold the shafts in place better that's all.

Please let me know if you find the answer elsewhere!  I am endlessley trawling the internet and contacting people on blogs who have restored Lillstina's but no luck yet.  I am currently corresponding with Joanne at Glimakra who has extensive knowledge of the Lillstina and is being really helpful and looking into this for me. So far she has confirmed that they are not original pieces of the loom and that the loom works fine with just the wooden shaft bars and string heddles, however like I said on the other post they seem to hold the top and bottom shaft bars more securely.   I am assuming you have a Lillstina, h

ave you got any on your loom?

Hello - I'm using Janet Phillips' old Lillstina.  The top and bottom of the shafts are connected with a metal rod, inserted into holes drilled for the purpose, rather as in SallyE's comment earlier.  They don't seem to do much more than just having spare heddles at either side would, except maybe provide some rigidity.
