Hi all,
I was lucky enough to spend 4 days studying with an Akha hilltribe spinner/weaver in northern Thailand back in 2002 - believe it or not, it's taken me SEVEN YEARS to get around to posting the photos! At any rate, they are now up at my new website, and I thought I'd share. The Akha loom is interesting - definitely NOT fine furniture, it's simple in construction, and quick and easy to set up and break down. I found it fascinating, even though I wasn't a weaver at the time.
The Akha weaving section can be found at http://www.tienchiu.com/travels/thailand/akha-weaving/ . I also have a few photos from learning Akha handspinning, at http://www.tienchiu.com/travels/thailand/akha-spinning-and-fiber-arts/ . There's other interesting stuff in the travel section as well, but mostly not fiber-related.
Also, this is as good a time as any to mention that my website has changed. I am slowly migrating everything over to http://www.tienchiu.com . As my old site (http://www.travelingtiger.com ) is quite extensive, it will take me some time to finish the migration, but the important stuff (which is to say the weaving section!) is up and running at http://www.tienchiu.com . I'd love your thoughts on the site design, as it is definitely a work in progress.
