Hi!

Fairly new weaver here with a couple of completed projects under my belt. I was hoping to start a new one that incorporates both plain weave and some sections with a traditional birds eye pattern. With a 4 harness, 6 treadle, counterbalance loom is this possible? I know it all depends on the threading and tie ups, and the one I am looking at is threaded 4-3-2-1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4-3-2-1. The tie ups are on 4 of the 6 treadles, so I was hoping I could do a tabby tie up on the other 2, but just not 100% on whether the threading would work like that. It looks close enough to a straight draw that I think it might, but wanted some expertise since it's all so new to me!

Thanks so much!

A quick look says yes, easily done if you want weft direction bands of plain weave.  Just tie the other two treadles 1+3 and 2+4 and you should be good to go.  Be aware that the two weave structures will draw in differently - the bird's eye will 'shrink' more than the plain weave.  You can counteract this by using a thicker weft for the bird's eye sections.  Or have a scalloped selvedge.  If you can't be perfect, be consistent!  :)

When it doubt, do a drawdown.  Many of the major weaving software developers have free demo versions of their software if you don't want to do it by hand.

Thank you! The weft for my birds eye is thicker, so that works out nicely. Just a little sampler project, but I'm a little more confident now. Thanks again!
