Hey all. Does anyone weave on an AVL with the auto advance mechanism? I am trying my first project on this loom with 24 epi and am having a difficult time getting the pick spacing correct when beating. I have changed the gear to a higher number, but the gaps seem to be getting larger. I am going to try smaller numbers, but would love some literature to read or an explanation of how these work. I can't seem to find anything on-line.

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe the rod isn't adjusted quite right and the pick wheel isn't advancing properly.  The lower the number, the fewer picks per inch.  The higher the number, the more picks per inch.  *IF* the rod is properly adjusted and is moving the pick wheel each time it is supposed to.

Email me if you want - I can send photos of mine or walk you through adjusting it.

Is it the old style with different cog wheels or the newer with the adjustable slide bar?

I think part of the trick is also to make sure you are beating the fabric and the beater is hitting the bumpers as you beat.  At least this has been my experience.

The guide that comes with the loom, probably online in the AVL library, is only a guide. There are adjustments to be made with the cogs, beater holes, and the pawl (has two hole settings). The old style advance was made to have you beat on the bumper which puts the fell line in the wrong place based on the geometry of the shed. My fell line is not on the bumpers with the pick advance. So ... depending on how you weave start with the AVL guide and go from there. Be sure that the wingnuts on the steel rod are tight. If they loosen up your pick out will change. The auto advance on my 40" FDL has never been wonderful but that is because I have the cord style auto tensioning and you can feel it slightly relax and tighten as the warp beam rotates. When I installed the Fireside rotary temples the pick advance now works perfectly. Also be sure your cloth roll up system is working. As the woven cloth gets larger in diameter the cloth may not be rolling to the cloth roller. Even though there is supposed to be no tension on the woven cloth, there is a relationship between the auto advance, sandpaper beam, and cloth roller.
