Back in the late 80's/early 90's Handwoven had an article about name drafting. I did find a very short article in the Nov/Dec 1999 and not much oline,so  I need help.

I understand assigning letters to shafts/blocks. But how is the teadling handled? I have been doing sample drawdowns by hand (I don't have/can't afford software), but it is taking forever, and I haven't come up with a treadling sequence which I like much. Is there a "rule" about the treadling? Barbara Walker's article had a beautiful picture of a Madelyn van der Hooght piece. How?????

My daughter is getting married, and I want to weave a special piece for them, but at this rate, they will have 3 kids before I figure out what I am doing!

I did Google, but nothing came up that was much help. I guess it is all treadled as written? Wish I could lay my hands on my old issues...

Handwoven Nov/Dec 1997 was an issue on names.

Also check Weaver's Journal #39, free at arizona university

It is all tromp as writ.

You can download weaving software demo for free.  It has everything though you are not allowed to save or print.  You can play to your heart desire and print screen.

Hi, I ran into this video today. It is a youtube video about tying up the treadles so it is less labor intensive. Hope it helps and doesn't confuse.

Good luck on your project,

Peg, WeaveDesign, if you Google that, you can download a free weaving program that allows saving and printing files. It's basic, but I use it in conjunction with demo versions of other software to look at more advanced techniques and snapshot the draft into Photoshop to save. WeaveDesign will export WIF's that the others can import or read.

Fiberworks is excellent weaving software and you can download a free demo of this. It has all the tools in the full version except that you cannot save a draft and you do not get all of their very good print options. Instead, you use a screen capture from your computer to make a picture of the draft on the screen. Or you can take a photo of the screen and print that. Fiberworks has a tool for making a name draft. Fiberworks is available for Windows or Mac computers. I don't sell it but the couple who make this software are friends of mine.

Normally name drafts are done in 4-shaft overshot and they are woven as drawn in. There's a place to click for weaving as drawn in, overshot style in Fiberworks. Or you can go back to your blocks from the name and weave the blocks- no substitutions needed, just add tabbies.
