Hello, I am a rigid heddle weaver looking to get into a floor loom.  I want a 4 shaft but there is a 2 shaft Union 36" loom for $100 up in my neighborhood.  It was used by it's owner up until her death which was recent so it's in working order.  It probably needs some minor work but that is nothing I would mind.

It seems this type of loom was used to weave rugs.  I was wanting something that did finer weaves though.  Any possibilty this loom could work for that or should I just pass on by till what I really want comes available?  I am looking for the opinions of those with more experience in floor looms than me. (Trust me, that isn't hard.) :D

I'm new to weaving and have an ORCO 70 which is very much like the Union 36. A workhorse for rag rugs. I think $100 for a working and complete Union 36 is a great deal. Wonder what more seasoned weavers will say. What's your neighborhood?

I live in CT and drove to NJ for mine for $150 off eBay. It was a donation to a fundraiser for a homeless shelter. Seller and buyer were SOOO happy! Hard to find them so cheap. My advise: do it, replace heddles and reed if necessary, then sell if you still want the 4 shaft.

I'm in East Tennessee.

I only have room in my house for one loom.  I definitely want to take a look at it before deciding for sure but it might be worth it for vintage resale value alone and I could get an idea of what I'm doing working on it.

Great idea. Here's a link to the original manual in PDF form. I've used that a bunch of times, it's really helpful. Good luck. http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/other/orc_loom.pdf

Vicarious shopping. I'm too far away to look at the loom. What did you find out? Decide?

Well, I had to go on vacation and I've been thinking about it.  I have a small space and only have room for one loom so I think I'll hold out for what I really want.  Used looms don't seem to come up too often but I'm a savvy and determined shopper. :D  Anyone know of a 4 shaft coming up in the East Tennessee area, let me know.
