My new  to me baby mac has a slow 3rd shaft.  I have sanded all the slots and cleaned it up as best I can.  Should I oil the mechanism?   Any ideas how to fix this?  It goes up fine but is slow to come down and if I treadle rapidly it will pop off the metal piece that connects to the harness.

What do you mean by "the metal peice that connects to the harness"?

The shaft hangs from a chain using an "S" hook.  Do you mean the "S" hook?   If so, just get a pliers and squeeze the loops closed.

On the baby mac the frames are push up by the lamms, not pulled up by chains.

Juseme I would clean and lub all the moving parts using a dry lub like "Blaster" dry slide, it goes on wet and then dries to a dry slick film.
On the metal clip weavers have done all kinds of thinks to keep the clip in place including a bolt.

My Baby Mac is fairly new and the center of the jacks are coated with the original Vaseline.  Where do you suggest she use the dry lube spray?

Ah!   I totally missed the fact that she was talking about a baby Mac.

Nevermind!

The problem with vaseline is it gets full of fiber. The dry slide lub was made for the military to lubecate weapons and not allow mud (Vietnam) (sand in the current wars) to stay on the weapons. I spray everything on all of our macs with it.

I just had my new-to-me Baby Mac serviced at Macomber. Originally shaft 3,4 &5 stuck, but by sanding and lubricating, I got 3 & 5 working well, but 4 kept sticking. Eddie sanded the shaft slot quite a bit more (then blew out the sawdust with a compressor) and sprayed with silicon (not WD-40!) and it works great now! Good Luck

So glad I checked in because I have the same problem with the second shaft on a Baby Mac . I will try sanding and silicon or the dry stuff Michael as talking about. Thanks!
