My Corner Of The World - July 2013 Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month! The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world. It does not have to be weaving related, but it could be. Feel free to tell us about holidays in your country, whether it is religious, or Independence day, or commemoration days. Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers are very visual people. Please remember to downsize your photo before uploading. Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?) This forum has members internationally. Have a good day!

I have not been very active on weavolution lately, but will soon be back. A year ago I sent husband and our home to Denmark from Norway, where we have been living for 27 years. I stayed in Bodø for another year, but in a few weeks I will finish work and move to Denmark as well.

This year I have been active in the local weaving guild (photoes will follow). I have been weaving for many years, I started by taking classes, but since then I have been weaving alone. This year I have been together with some 20 enthusiastic weavers and the many looms of the guild. It has been a great experience, and I have learned a lot. I have woven some rep weave and learned how to make skillbragd (upphämta). I don't know the english expression for that, but it was great fun, and I am sure I will make more of it. I have tried out a loom that was bigger than the one I had and I found that it suited me well. When I come to Denmark I will have a new to me Öxabäck loom, the biggest with 16 shafts and two yarn beams.

More news next month from Eva

Hope you get lots of viewers and maybe even a sale or two?  :)  Love the photo with the sun coming through the shawl....

Liv Vigdis and Liv working on a warp for a rep rug

Kristin, Anita and Marit are warping for Nordlandsåkle, table runners in skillbragd (upphämta in swedish). Everybody chose their own colours for pattern weft, and when the weaving was finally taken from the loom it was very colourful.

Happy Independence Day USA Lots of fireworks to celebrate here in tinder dry California. I'll be making potato salad for a family gathering today. Today is a National Holiday, all government, banks, etc. will be closed today. Many companies, including mine, give the day off with pay. Be safe! Have a joyful day! Franco Rios Sacramento, Calif.

Nice pictures Kerstin. Any ideas why they like that white wall?
Have a good day!

Spent the day with 3 wannabe dyers.  I over dyed a bunch of scarves and a shawl while they did loose fibre, roving and yarns.  I think we got a little giddy breathing vinegar fumes, but everyone went home with things they were excited to work with.  And I've got scarves that are 'not white'.  :0

cheers,

It was gloomy and overcast most of last week, but the sun came out for the 4th. However, the steamy heat has been hanging around and will continue to do so well into next week. (Steamy heat for us means the 90's.)

Who knew New Jersey could look like this?

Taken at Highpoint, in Sussex County, along the Appalachian Trail, looking northwestward toward New York (right) and Pennsylvania (left).

My corner of the world shifts to Boston tomorrow - and then NEWS for the weekend.  :)

I'm hoping it isn't *too* hot and steamy....

cheers,

of lovely cool temps - lows in the 60s and highs in the low to mid 90s - we are back to over 100 during the day, high 70s for lows and the humidity has moved in - if it is going to be humid I wish it would rain - we need rain!

Michael White

I would be happy to send you rain. We have been locked in a rainy weather pattern for a think the last 47 days. It has rained everyday. We have a sink hole in the back yarn, where I filled in a hand dug well (38 feet deep,6 foot dia) about 30 years ago. The sink hole is about 3 feet deep right now and still growing. Last year we were in a extreme drought. Our normal avg rain fall is 56 inches a year, so far this year we have had 34.90 inches (Weather service report) Macon 45.15 inches as of yesterday. The National Weather Services is talking like this should start changing this coming Thursday. In the mean time I am looking online for plans for building an "Ark"

Well for the first time in two months we went for 24 hours without any rain here in Penfield, GA. We have a ton of mushrooms of all types. Cheryl told me that she has two very large mushrooms on the yarn at her office. She would love to eat them but is not certain if it is save to do so. lots of lawn mowers are getting torn up trying to mow very high wet grass including mine. I will change out the blades today.

On and off for the last three days - much needed, very welcome - it was nice that the temps dropped as well - Sunday and Monday were only in the 70s, yesterday got into the low 80s, today is 50% chance of rain and low 80s. Very nice.

Michael White

Well we did get that one day (24 hours) without any rain. That all ended last night, it was a lovely day untill the storms moved in yesterday eveing. Not so bad here but lots of trees down north and northwest of us.

Endorph I am glad to see the southwest is getting some much needed rain.

still going on in the Northeast. After so many sustained days of 90+ degree heat, there are concerns about the equipment. 8 million people in NYC, and 8 million people in NJ. That's a lot of unhappy campers if we start having brown outs or rotating shut offs. Fingers crossed.

endorph

break from the heat is ending today - it was humid and foggy on the drive on in this morning and already heating up - we are back into the high 90s for the weekend.

debmcclintock

Home from Washington DC which had a Houston like steamy hot spell. One did not move fast thru the streets. I presented my Looms of SE Asia talk to over 30 docents and curator specialists. It was well received. It is nice to talk to folks that have the same level of interest in equipment used to create pattern outside of the treadle/tieup. Hard to believe when I arrived at the Austin airport that it was way cooler than the mid-atlantic area. Back to unpacking textiles and props and picking Texas persimmons for prepping dyebaths.

Michael White

It has been hotter in the NE then it has been here in the "sunny" south. Yesterday in places around Atlanta rain was coming down at 3 inches an hour. Washing out roads and building foundations. Lots of trees still going down. Today as a small cold front comes through with high winds we are looking at more trees coming down.

OK, so now it's in the 80's, but the humidity is 90%, so not much improvement.

sally orgren

Waddled right up to the sliders in my office, and acted like he stumbled upon a big movie screen. Poor thing, you can see he was pretty drenched from the most recent downpour. I hope with all the rain, the grubs are good eating!
