I have a 12 shaft Woolhouse Tools loom that came to me with just one reed, sett at 10 EPI.  The loom is 27 inches wide and will probably be used for lighter work (shawls, scarves and dishtowels) since I have a Glimakra for rugs etc.  I'd love to hear suggestions for the most versatile next reed to purchase.  Thank you.

My go to reeds are 8, 10 and 12. I also have 4, 5, 6, 9 and 15 which all get used at times. Cheers Laura

If I were you, I'd get a 12 dent next.   The thing to remember is that you can put multiple thin threads into one larger dent, but you can't put a thick thread through the smaller dent reeds.

Then the other thing to think about is the numbers.   With a 10 dent you can do several EPIs:   10, 20, 30

With a 12 dent you can do:   12, 24, 36, 48, etc.

You can also do a second thread every other dent (1-2-1-2), or every 3d dent (1-1-2-1-1-2, or 2-2-1-2-2-1), to get the mid way numbers on a reed, etc., etc.

So it's all in the arithmetic!

I find 12 to be my favorite reed.  I think it's all about what you're weaving.  The majority of my fibers are sett at 15, 18, 21, and 24 EPI, all of which I can achieve with ease.  I've also done 9, 12, 36, 48, and 60 with my 12 dent.

So I agree with SallyE - think about what you'll likely be weaving and buy a reed that suits your intended setts.
