Hello, friends. I recently aquired a lovely cherry Gallinger loom. I am actively looking for more information about them, amd for folks who have used them. Anyone want to share?
These were designed my Osma Tod Gallinger, and were built in Pennsylvania, most recently in East Berlin, for The Mannings. They have been out of production for about 20 years, but The Mannings still use them (and others) in their classes. The cherry ones are the most desirable, the later oak ones, less so.
I would love to see photos of this loom.

I also have a Gallinger loom, made out of walnut. It is a counterbalance 4 -shaft. It was the first loom I purchased from the mother of my first weaving instructor out in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1985. It probably was made in the 70's. It is gorgeous to weave on and folds up at the back beam to tuck to the side if I need extra room. Several years ago my metal brake split from the shaft. I had it re-welded and have not had a problem since. It has been a good friend and I hope to have many more weaving adventures with it!
I have just acquired a Gallinger - my first loom since the table loom I had as a kid. I am cleaning it up and ordering new parts. I have been researching this loom and weaving in general, and I'm excited to become a part of the weaving community!
I have no idea how to post a picture of it!
I acquired my Gallinger last year and still have not used it. I have been a little intimidated, using an Ashford table loom instead. I think these looms are so beautiful, as pretty as a piece of furniture. I have plans to warp her up soon, though.
Hello, I just purchased a Gallinger loom. Can I ask where you are getting your parts? Do you have aby kind of manual or diagram etc. Amy
The Mannings sold the Gallinger looms until thelate 70's or early 1980's. They will have more info than just about anyone else. The still use them in their teaching studio.
I want to renew this forum during Halloweave 2015. The pictures in this thread show the curve of the beater with reprise in the top of the castle. Osma Gallinger Tod was my weaving teacher. I worked in her Coral Gables studio as a teenager. I hope to connect with others who own these beautiful and very well thought out looms.
I have a Gallinger 4 harness loom from their 1940 catalog. It is a beauty made from maple. I need to find a photo of the back of this loom or similar to assist with reassembly. Also would like to find a resource for ordering parts. Any thoughts?

Your loom is the first Gallinger I have encountered in maple. The looms were also made in cherry and, later, oak. Does your loom have the original sectional beam on it?
The loom doctor, Tom Beaudet, has restored Gallinger looms. He sent me pictures of one, including a back view of the loom without warp on it. You have inspired me to figure out how to post the pictures. I also have a pinterest board of Gallinger loom pictures.

Tom Beaudet, The Loom Doctor, has restored Gallinger looms. He sent me pictures of a loom he restored that includes a very clear picture of the back without warp. I will figure out how to post pix here. In the meantime, you can check out my Pinterest board of Gallinger looms.
The warm glow of the wood in this picture reminds me of sitting at the loom weaving in Osma Tod's studio. You can see the direct tie up of the wide treadles and the original counterbalance mechanism. I may replace the strapping material on mine with texsolv when I restore it. Until recently, I was sure that I would replace the canvas apron with fresh canvas. I am less sure since I started weaving on 2 looms without canvas aprons.
The scale of the Gallinger looms is very human and the warm furniture quality of the woood working is at home in any room. I am especially partial to the curved top of the beater and castle.
I'm currently weaving on a Gallinger loom which belonged to Martha Stanley's mother. It takes two people to advance the warp as the chain on the back beam does not slide smoothly, so one person needs to deal with that while the second depresses the brake. Any ideas on how to solve that problem? We've tried to unhook the chain and wind it on from the other direction, but it is not quite long enough to attach to the hook when configured that way.
It would be helpful to see pictures???

I started this group when Weavolution was a happening place in hopes of creating a community for users, and to share resources about Gallinger looms. I studied weaving with Osma Gallinger Tod as a teenager and have a 24 inch loom from her studio. Osma was a wonderful teacher, organizer and prolific writer. Milo Gallinger creates looms to facilitate Osma’s teaching with special attention to the needs of handicapped weavers. I just threw all caution to the wind and purchased a Gallinger. Now I have to figure out how to get it from VA to PA. I would love to know as much as possible about this loom.
