I am asking about the shuttle in the middle. It is 17" long, 2" wide and 1 3/8" tall and quite heavy. Thanks for any info you can give!

If it has a metal tip (quite sharp) it is an industrial fly shuttle with an end delivery pirn.  If it doesn't have a metal tip, it is a hand end delivery (or feed) shuttle.

cheers,

Laura

It has a metal tip. What do you mean by industrial fly shuttle? It was used in a business as opposed to home use?

laurafry

Yes, it was originally used in an industrial weaving loom.  Some hand looms have fly shuttles, too.

While they can be used in a home loom (after filing the tip so that it isn't so sharp) they are heavy and therefore more tiring to use than a hand shuttle.

My AVL has a fly shuttle and I have half a dozen or so industrial fly shuttles that I use with that loom when I'm weaving wider cloth.  When I'm weaving narrower fabrics I use an ordinary Leclerc boat shuttle.

If you are interested I have video clips on You Tube showing how to wind a pirn (the thing that holds the yarn in a fly shuttle) as well as regular bobbins and paper quills.

cheers,

Laura

Laura, once again you come to my rescue! I think it will just be a decorative item for me. I will be checking out your videos.

They are fun to have around. :) Cheers

Looks similar to this one I made. Mines a little longer, intend to make another about 2" shorter.

I am also designing my shuttle boxes a little different to accomodate narrower weaves if the need arrives.

Made my own pirns to.

Looks like it. You are very talented.
