Ouch Laura, I hope the ice is doing good, hopefully you have some thrums you can wrap around the cast and get some yarn in your life during this time!  Maybe prop your leg on the weaving bench to have some contact with your loom?  regards  Deb

Hi Laura,

I sent you a book to help cheer you up while you're housebound.  Look for it in the mail!

Hope you enjoy it,

Tien

Thanks everyone.  Turns out I'm 'sensitive' to opiates and now that I'm off of them I'm feeling enormously better.  :)  Enough that I'm starting to think again.

One of the things I expect I will do is make some lace.  I've got a bookmark started so easy enough to just start by finishing that.

I also have a stack of good books and some jigsaw puzzles.

Best of all, I have a new studio elf - one of my beginning students from the March workshop.  She's willing to come and help me out in return for more lessons.  She's even willing to come to the fibre festival March 26/27 to lend a hand.  We're working on transportation for her now.

Since I needed surgery (metal plate on one side, two screws on the other - do I know how to do things really well?) I don't have a cast.  Cannot put *any* weight on that leg for 6 weeks, which is going to be extremely challenging!!!!

I did manage to wash my hair in the bathroom sink today, so that gives me hope that I won't be completely helpless.

I can also look forward to setting off the metal detectors at airports.....who needs a tattoo when they have 'interesting' scars and internal bling?

Laura,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Your sense of humor is great. Hooray for your studio elf! I hope you get better fast.

Dear Laura:

I love your attitude... making lemonade (pink, I think!) from all those lemons that came your way and made you break your ankle.  With that wonderful attitude you have... you''ll be dancing on your treadles in no time!  Heal quickly!

:-) Suzy

The good news is that when I explained I needed full mobility in my ankle for weaving the surgeon approved weaving as the number 1 therapy - once I can put weight on my leg again.  Just have to get through the next 5.5 weeks.....  :}

Cheers,

Laura

Sensitive to opiates?!!

That's a real bummer.

Since you can't put weight on the ankle, you might want to try fingerweaving.

Or crochet.

Get well soon!

Have a good day!

Laura-- oh my !  I sure hope you heal quickly and thoroughly!  Looks like a good time to use a hand-operated loom, huh? Take good care of yourself.. marie

Hope you heal quickly.

And don't get up too soon. When I had an immobilizer and infuser (tubes tapes all over upper body) a few years ago, I was supposed to be able to shower, but for the first time in my life went to the beauty shop to have my hair washed. Got me out of the house and it felt nice.

Good thing you have that air assist - and there are always finger manipulated techniques that don't need treadles. If you lived closer, I'd put you to work on the cut pile rug I'm doing - It will definitely take as long to finish as your ankle will to heal.

Thanks Sara - I'm looking forward to making some bobbin lace, reading and making a few jigsaw puzzles.......  :)

Cheers,

Laura

Laura,

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!  Lack of mobility is no fun!  Enjoy the time to read, do puzzles, and make lace.

 Laura,

Sending you healing vibes from across the continent.  Hope you can find the patience to be a patient - one of the few forms of patience hard for weavers.

Broken bones are never good, but at least a few more weeks and you'll get some weaving therapy. Wishing you a swift recovery. Cheers, Erica

Laura,

I'm so sorry you broke your leg.   That airport thing (implanted metal) isn't really that difficult.   I have a hip replacement, but it doesn't cause much delay at all.   TSA seems really used to dealing with things like that.

Heal fast!

laurafry

Hi Sally - I broke my ankle last year and this spring had the metal out.  So, no more worries about airport security!  :)

cheers,

Laura

Laura - sorry to hear about your ankle - so frustrating to be immobilized.  I had abdominal surgery a month ago - took days to get down off the meds.  I've been reading mysterys (stocked up ahead), re-learning thread crochet (finished 15 bookmarks for my xmas tea), crocheted 3 baby blankets, and started knitting a vest for xmas.  I'm still healing, but getting lots done sitting in my rocker and watching bbc on tv.  Enjoy the books and look forward to seeing pictures of the lace & the puzzles too !

I am so sorry to hear you've broken your ankle! Having broken a leg myself , a long time ago, I know this is not an easy thing to go through! I am happy to hear that you have a new studio elf! It sounds like she will be very helpful. In the meantime I hope that you enjoy your more quiet endeavors and when you get the lace bookmark done give us a post!

Sara von Tresckow

Hoping you have a speedy recovery.

I'm all healed now - I broke it March 2009.  :)  Not sure why the thread came up on the current message list.........

Right now I'm in the midst of craft fair season - last day of the local show.  Tomorrow we leave for Vancouver and Circle Craft, then the following week we drive to Calgary, Alberta to do Art Market there.

cheers,

Laura
