I like to wash mine before I hem them, because if you hem them first sometimes the hem shrinks less and the hem is wider than the body of the cloth.  Not my preferred look :( .  You must stabilized the cut edge before you put it in the washing machine or it will unravel.  I have serged the edges, or machine stitched twice or tie the warps in knots near the web so that it can't come undone-- you can then cut off the knots when it's out of the washer.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I don't have a sewing machine (yet) so I will probably do the knots.
