Can someone please tell me what sett to use with 8/4 cotton rug warp and Pendleton blanket selvedges as weft.  Do you double the warp threads.  I have received a box of these selvedges but have no idea how to weave with them.  Called Pendleton in Portland but they couldn't help as no one there weaves.  Found info on using the regular selvedges (the fuzzie ones) but nothing on the blanket selvedges.  Any info/tips, etc. would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,  Donna

Hi Donna, I made 4 6-8 ft. rugs with the selvedges 14 or so years ago following the directions in Weaver's magazine. I want to say I set them at 5 or 6 epi plain weave. You can sett them at 4 ( very thick) or even 8 (making the rug a little thinner). I used carpet warp not doubled (wish I doubled it) but the rugs have been tromped on and abused for 14 years now and no broken warp threads. I think it has something to do with the stringy weft covering the warp threads and protecting them. I take the rugs twice a year to a laundry mat to run them thru the washing machine. Also, the weft has to be beat in very hard, which makes a heavy rug that lies flat so you don't trip on it and use a temple to control the draw in.

Hi - and sorry if I am hijacking this thread.  I have bag of the selvedges that are stringy, but I don't believe my looms are up to the task of rug making (Schacht mighty wolf and schacht standard floor loom).  I think I need to find other ways to use them.   Has anyone used the selvedges to made anything other than rugs?

Your Schacht standard should be up to making rugs.  You may want to add weght to the beater; I have added steel bars from Home Depot to a beater for more weight.  It should give you the warp tension you need.  Perhaps someone else has some ideas, but I can't think of anything but a rug-like textile to make with them.

Also, some issues of the newsletter produced by Janet Meany (visit the weaver's friend website) may help answer your question.

Those are two places were experienced rug weavers can be found, and I am sure many have woven with the blanket selvedges.

I assume the blanket selvedges are made from wool and thicker than the blended cotton chenille "worms" (i.e. stringy stuff) that a lot of people have in their stash? Or, is it the other way around?

Two uses I can think of is a carpetbag (oversize carry all or small overnight bag) or a table mat. I've noticed a few patterns for carpetbags on line and also leather handles for them. Easy to make your own is your good at that sort of thing. I think the tablemats for hot items would work since the fiber content is mostly wool and wouldn't melt. Might need a closer set like 12 or 15 epi so it's not so thick but a heavy beat to firm it up.

Also, a small pad for your weaving bench.

another question about my post below, weaving with Pendleton selvedges (the fringy kind).  Does anyone have opinions about wet finishing the rug or not?

Thanks! ~ Jo

I tried to weave a sample of the 1.5-2" wide fringy/fuzzy selvedges (not the blanket selvedges or the flat worms). I used 12 epi, one warp per dent. A 2' x 2' sample took HOURS!  I layed in the selvedges all going the same way, but had to use a fork with each pick to pull out the fringes. I see people using 8 epi, warp threads doubled, 5 or 6 epi, and someone has used 2 picks of warp thread between each pick of selvedges. Does anyone have recommendations about sett, doubling warp threads, or using picks of warp threads between selvedges? I bought bags of this stuff and fear I will spend the rest of my life weaving it. Thanks! ~ Jo

I just got some Pendleton selvedges (looks like shaggy fringe) and not sure exactly how to weave them. I notice a lot of questions about them but not a  lot of answers. Should I try and pick the shaggy part out to the front of the rug? If so how? Should I put regular 8/4 cotton in between the shaggy wefts or just use the shaggy fringe for weaving? Does anyone have any experience with this?  I see jojohnson3 above has pretty much asked the same questions.  Thank you all.....
