Fiber: wool

Fabric ends: no fringe

Previously I have used a hemstitch as an alternative to knots to secure the weft; however, the fringe remained. Will a hemstitch serve as a finished edge, if fringe is removed completely?

With wool should you eliminate the fringe before or after the wet finish?

You can fold a hem up and secure it with hemstitching (hence the name "hemstitching").  If you hemstich without a hem, just fringe, and you cut off the fringe, you will have a raw edge.  Depending on what the use of the textile is, this may be acceptable, but the stitching may not hold through usage.

Letting usage be my guide, I will bind the ends further. A simple yarn wrap binding appeals to me. A raw edge on my neck pouch would have fit the rustic look that I was attempting, but requires something sturdier for the frequent handling.

The dish towels I hemstitched held up well, but they do have a short fringe.
