After spending a couple of days during my recent visit to the US with two Montagnard weavers of Vietnam and buying a beautiful 12ft long sash from them with dozens of traditional and contemporary warp float motifs, I was able to reproduce the structure and some of the motifs on two pieces which I have made into zippered pouches. I tried to use the same colors that are favored by the two weavers who are from the Jarai and Rhade tribes, basically black with fine stripes of yellow, green with red and white patterning. This was a new twist on a technique that I already knew and produces an interesting effect. The weavers also use cross knit looping as a joining and decorative stitch and so I edged one of the bags with red looping in a single column, unlike the triple column looping that is generally used here in Bolivia.

I have BLOGGED about my visit with the Vietnamese weavers and have lots of photos of their textiles and weaving processes there.
