I would like to weave some panels to hang up at the end of our porch and wondered what yarn I should use that would hold up in my northern weather.  They would be exposed to the afternoon sun (but only in the summer) and the snow and cold during the winter (as I'm sure that I wouldn't take them down).

I would like to weave a lace pattern, as I would still like the light and air to flow through, but still have a bit of privacy.

So probably some kind of nylon or acrylic yarn would be best - I wonder how light fast they are.

Maurice Brassard sells polyester and acrylics.  Generally they are pretty indescructible.  :)

What about straw, jute, hemp, wood slats or other sturdy plant material?

You can do leno or other finger manipulated lacey weaves and get something very nicely suited to a porch atmosphere.

Since even those nylon garden flags fade out fairly quickly, it will be difficult to keep these nice for more than a few years.

Yarn in the garden

I use scrap acrylic yarn (cheap) as support for my peas and beans in the garden here in San Diego, CA.  We get intense desert sun most of the year and I find that the yarn holds it's strength pretty well and fades only a bit in one season.  It seems to hold up well against the sprinkler.  The yarn I have used for trellis lashing lasts easily two or three seasons before weakening.  A weave in your climate will probably last several years, or until you get tired of it and make new.

Good luck and please show what it looks like?  Your concept sounds yummy!

Hi.  I made a bunch of cushions for all my outside benches and chairs.  I wove them in a nylon cord that I got in the fishing department of WalMart -- mine were in bright neon colours, but there were many colours to choose from.  They have faded a lot in five years, but I still like them.  I also made outside cushions from some nylon that I got from Bassard a long time ago -- I don't know if they still carry it.  It came in about 20 colours and was a looser spin than the cord.  It has held up very well with virtually no fading.
