Well, I have been refinishing my old - new to me Varpapuu.   One of the things that I did was to remove all the hardware, strip it, and repaint it - RED!   Problem is, I forgot to take pics before I removed things.   I got it all back together in the right places except this little spare piece.  So I have been looking for little nail holes to see where it goes, but that isn't helping.  I have a feeling it goes on the inside of the left side frame, but do to what?   This loom has two ratchet brakes and they are both on the right of course.

I do remember that it was attached just with a little nail through the hole on the far left in this picture.

I was thinking that maybe the "hook" on the right is supposed to catch a chord that wraps around the back beam a couple of times to prevent lurching when you release tension on the back brake, but if so, what is that little piece of metal standing up on the left for?

Does anybody have an idea what this little thing is supposed to do?

Thanks!

Sally

I am new to this site & realize this is an old post but I'm needing the same assistance. I have a Varpapuu that I bought new in 1973.

I no longer have the maunual but from what I remember, it was mostly just illustrations and any text was in Finnish.

I have had it taken apart & stored for many years as circumstances didn't leave me much time for weaving. Now that I'm ready to take up a shuttle again, I have reassembled my old loom but sure enough.. I can't remember exactly how this friction brake attaches. I remember it was attached to the left side of the warp beam and hooked onto a little nail but I can't remember how it attaches to the beam. Any ideas? Maybe I'm missing another little nail?

My Varpapuu has a ratchet and pawl on both the cloth beam and the warp beam, so I'm not going to be much help on a friction brake, except to say that they work in generally the same way on all looms.

The only real trick is making sure that the correct end is tied down and that it goes around the beam in the right directions.   Look at any othe loom (Leclerc has good manuals) and you should be able to see how it works.

That spare part that I posted (above) is probably a brake part of some sort, but I've never determnined exactly what it's for or how to use it, and the loom works fine with out it, so. . . . .

BTW, my loom came with a manual which I copied and gave to Janet Meeny at The Weavers Friend.   You can get a copy from her for $15.

Hi..thanks for the quick reply. I took another look and realized I was missing a small nail or screw. The extra part you have is the brake for the left side on the warp beam. The little flat part rests on the metal edge of the beam & it attaches on that end to the frame just above the beam & the other end hooks over a little nail head located about 5" away on the side. The little spring keeps the tension & the curved part is a finger grip to release it.When I get it all back together I'll send you a picture. It's kind of coming back to me now. Putting this old loom together again has been like meeting an old friend. I have a small Dorset but the Varpapuu was my first. Hope you've been enjoying yours & again, thanks for the reply.

Oh, yes, please post a picture of how that part is supposed to work.

It seems weird to have it on the left.   How can you advance from the front or using the handle on the right and release the tension on the left at the same time?    I await your picture to explain all!
