Notes

I have done a couple of sample pieces so far, and plan a full sized rug / saddle pad.

The basic idea is to weave a few rows of plain weave with a wool weft (seven seems to work), then take locks of unprocessed wool and wrap them around every third warp thread, beat in place, and continue with plain weave. Every centimetre or so, you do another row of wool locks. The resulting fabric is smooth on one side (with the regular weave interspersed with thicker rows of 'rovings' bumps) and the other side is like a sheepskin rug - raw wool in tufts. The finished piece can be washed (gently to preserve the structure, or harshly to felt it on purpose). You end up with something that's like sheepskin without the skin!
