I plan on maybe a project with pleats using differential shrinkage in the weft, or a window pane open weave which when wet finished "felts" a little to secure the loosely woven web.  This will be my first try at a weave of this type!  Maybe I'll try both!

How about you?

Hi Dawn

This is my first foray into this kind of weaving as well!

I recently joined the Collapse Pleat Bump study group at Complex weavers, so I'm glad you chose this subject. I can start my research during Halloweave in good company!

I'm not sure quite where I'm going to start...I'm waiting for that moment of inspiration(the one that comes right out of the blue).

As soon as I have some ideas I'll post them...

I have thought of window panes with the pane in cotton and the rest in wool. I also have some very nice bamboo that might be gorgeous with some wool I have that is good for felting. But I do not know how it will react to hot water. Will have to give it a try in the washer.

-and then I have to hurry up with the projects I have on my looms at the moment, they are all occupied, except for the inklette which will not do for the shrinking project.

I've never done a project with differential shrinkage before, either, but I've admired some very beautiful projects other people have woven!  I'm not sure exactly what I want to attempt....  I have a copy of the "Best of Weaver's - Fabrics that Go Bump", and I'll peruse that to spark some ideas.

First, though -- like Eva, I need to weave off the things that are on my looms (and unearth one of them!).

I've done a few pieces that collapsed or shrank - on purpose - and loved it. I'd like to weave something open and felt it.

Trish, could you share a picture of your collapse/shrunk weaves?  We would love to see them

Hi fellow (Shrunk Heads, Shrinkies(lol)...do we want a nickname here?!!)

Inspiration did indeed pop up out of the blue...(while the kettle was boiling for a cup of tea)

I'm going to weave a test sample on my small loom exploring ratio and weave structure. I'll arrange warp sections of different size stripes of wool and non-shrink yarn, then weave the same arrangement in the weft to get a checkerboard pattern. My loom has a mechanical dobby head, so I'll thread the warp in a straight draw, and then change weave structure as I go along. I think it might be interesting to see how the different weaves feel when they've been shrunk.

I'll do some colour windings soon and post photos...it's going to be fun!

I have done a collapse weave once. It was fun, but I have never done differential shrinkage before. In order to get that done I went to Husfliden today. That is the shop in Norway where you would traditionally expect to find weaving equipment. As you can see from their webpage there is little to indicate any allution to weaving, but, as it turned out after digging through the cobwebs, there is a basement deep under the shop where they hide their weaving yarn. I was invited down to see and found some mercerized cotton 12/2 for my shrinking project. I was told that they sell very little weaving yarn, so they keep it out of sight. No wonder I said, I had no idea that I would find this treasure, and I promised to come back another time.

Hopefully after this week (first week of teaching school, orientation, new students etc) I can put a sample on a loom.  First project - wool & tencel/cotton ruffle scarf!

Have a warp that has been made for at least 2 years and now is the time.Made it with 8/2 unmercerized cotton. The warp will be 20/2 mercerized. This will give me the push I need. Thanks all.

Inspired/intrigued by Cathie's sample here, I will try to make at least a sample. There are a few other things to get done first, so I don't know if I can do it "on time"...
