Hello everyone,

I am a passionate sewer and always dreamed of weaving my own fabric. And now I am in the middle of my project and I already learned a lot- by reading in weavolution and by making mistakes :-)

So far I did the beaming of two warps with an ashford 8-shaft table loom. I recently purchased the additional back beam and this weekend I hope to make some progress.

I would like to invite you to my blog where I write about the progress and in the end I hope to show a chanel inspired jacket made out of self woven fabric.

Thank you for giving me a lot of information so far!

Best regards from Germany,

Claudia

Dear Cathie,

thank you for the nice comment! I started weaving today and I am very excited, also a bit unsure if my project will work out the way I planned it. But with such nice comments I am looking forward to a happy ending.

Best regards

I am always interested to see how people use textured yarns - looking forward to see the product.

I have taken the time to go to the Chanel section at Bergdorf Goodman in New York to look at the jacket fabrics. They are lovely - and you are working in the riht direction. One thing that I noticed was that these fabrics are often "backed" - that is a second layer is woven and "stitched" to the outside fabric. With the open sett and textured threads, just a single layer is not sturdy enouth. Try to find a boutique of high end department store and look at a real Chanel creation to figure out some of the subtleties used.

I am overwhelmed by your help, thank you so much.

I already noticed that my weaving sample was not comparable to the fabrics in my stash. The sewing method I am going to use for the chanel jacket is from a book of Claire M. Shaeffer. She is an expert on those garments and I will interface the whole parts with white silk organza. And the lining will then be quilted to the stabilized fabric as Chanel does it.

And I think I am to shy to walk into a Chanel Store to have a closer look on the originals. But you are right- it is the only way to see the original.

Thank you so much for your help!

Best regards

Claudia

Me again,

it is Claire B. Shaeffer, and her book is called

“the couture cardigan jacket : sewing secrets from a chanel collector“

I started down the Chanel path last fall. Susan khalje has an online class for a princess seam that was very helpful.  I used a store bought brocade to make the lessons-learned jacket.  Some techniques were better done Claudia Schiffer's way.  The silk charmeuse lining is quilted to the fashion fabric. LOTS of hand sewing.

I am now gathering my thoughts on yarn to weave for the "real" jacket.

you should definitely go see a jacket if you can. It really helped me.
