I took Alice Schlein's Photoshop for the Dobby Loom 2 years ago. I signed up for it not even noticing or having much interest in weaving text, but when we got to that segment of the class, something clicked in my brain. So--now that I knew how to weave text, what did I have to say? I started collecting Gandhi phrases, so this is one. Oh, oops--when you quote someone, you should credit them.
"Take to spinning for peace of mind." Gandhi
20/2 Lyocell warp, handspun brown cotton warp twist singles pattern weft approx. 10's count, millspun wool singles about 10's cotton count. Designed with a fall work shirt in mind, so that the wool (the outside of the fabric) would shrink and be wind breaking and the cotton on the inside would make terry-like loops. The wool is plain weave, like an overshot tabby, the pattern is 8-end satin. The long floats on the back allow it to attempt to fold back on itself when the wool shrinks. It isn't long enough to fold, so it makes the loops.
The fabric is still in yardage form.
It took me six weeks of spinning & weaving almost full time to make this piece. My beat was not consistent, but I entered it in the 2012 Convergence yardage exhibit anyway, & they accepted it.It came home from there and hung in the Blue Ridge Fiber Show exhibit in the fall of 2012.
