Hello,

I can't seem to find any information anywhere on what to do when changing colors. I want to start a plaid with 7 or 8 colors and changes every 4 to 8 weaves. Running that many threads up the selvege would be very tangly and messy. Right? If you cut every time what do you do? It is a 2/2 twill.

I have a sample on the loom right now and I am cutting every colorchange and laying the cut in with the next weave.

Please help

Thanks.

If you weave with very fine threads and plan to cut and sew, it does not matter and you don't need to tuck in the ends.  However, if you are weaving with thicker threads, you can plan your project so that you can just keep the colors going.  A skip of more than four threads would not be good.  So, plan to make stripes of two wefts, perhaps alternating two colors and just keep weaving.  Or, weave much thicker stripes and cutting and tucking in the ends.  So, you will be solving the selvage problem with your design.

The two pieces of tartan yardage I wove for kilts ( one mine, another for a commission job), I only tucked the end of a last color on one side [ my right side] that would be the selvedge hem edge and just cut the ends on the left side as that ragged edge would be where the waist line would be cut and sewn together. If you are making a wide shawl or throw it might be better to tuck both sides and stitch / hem the ends or tie off fringe.

By tuck do you mean weave in with the next row?
