I have a 12 dent reed that is 27" long. My project has 23EPI so I put 2 threads in each dent but put only one dent in the 24th dent. I think that's all good. My problem comes when I'm trying to thread the heddles, I don't have enough. I need over 500. Can you thread the heddles with more than one thread going through them or is it best to just order more heddles?

Thanks for any help. This is my first post so hopefully I can find where to read your responses. :)

Yes, of course consider ordering more heddles so this doesn't happen again, as it sounds like you like those finer setts. Also, what is your project....might you consider decreasing the width in reed of the project and create a longer warp, so you'll need less heddles. More details please, like what is the warp made of, weft made of, intended sett, width of project. Are you on a time constraint? Is it going to be cut and sewn into something?

It sounds like you are just entering this wonderful weaving world and you will have sooooo much fun!!!

If you're short a few heddles you can make some out of carpet warp or similar smooth string.  If you're short a lot, I would buy more.  I wouldn't try to put more than one end in a heddle unless you want the two ends to weave as one.

I want to make a head scarf. The plan is that it will end up being 24" x 24". The yarn I orderded was a bit too fine but it was expensive so I'm using it. It's a wool silk blend. The tag says Zephyr. 2oz. = 630yds. I made the warp and the weft out it. I don't know what "set" means. I will not sew it but will prbably tie the edges. I'd really like it to be 24" x 24" when it's done. Her birthday was in Jan. so I guess I'm a little late, but that's ok, I'll have it done when I can get it done. :)

This sounds like a beautiful project.  Set is just another way of saying "ends per inch".  You said you have 23 epi so that's the same thing as 23 set.  To make a 24" scarf, assuming 10% shrinkage during finishing, you'll have to thread 26" wide at 23 epi = 598 threads.  So you need 598 heddles.  If you have 4 frames you should put on 150 heddles per frame.  Don't own enough?  If they're string heddles, make more.  If not, order more.  I've had good luck with inserted eye heddles from Gowdey Reed: http://www.gowdeyreed.com/handloom_heddles.html

Thanks Mrdubyah, I just ordered some heddles from a lady selling some here on this site and she thought there was about 600, so I should be good to go.

As for the size of my scarf. I was limited to 24" because the beam that the finished product gets wraped around is only 24" and I don't know how to do some crazy thing where they do half of the project on two frames and the other half on the other two frames........and it is folded in half on the loom, once you take it off it's twice the size.

I think I'll be ok with a 22" x22" scarf, I know she will never wear it anyway. It will be too nice, she'll say, and then save it with her nice things. She still has the dish cloth I knitted for her all folded up and tucked in a plastic bag.

She had an all white headscarf in her lock box and was SO happy when I found it and brought it to her. She said, JILL, they don't make these white scarves 100% wool anymore, you can't get these anymore ANYWHERE! I just smiled because I knew I could make one. Later she called me all upset, she read the tag and it said 100% acrylic, and that she was wrong. Now I KNOW this is going to be the best gift EVER!!! :)

Jill,

What kind of loom are you using?

Cat Brysch

you are ordering more heddles. It's the best and will make your loom more useful for you with all kinds of projects in your weaving future! Yes, it sounds like it will be the best gift EVER!!!

I have a Dorset loom, and I LOVE it! I can already FEEL many many more looms in my future, LOL!!! :)

I spin wool now and knit, but I wanted to learn how to weave also so that I can use my own yarns to make fabric and my own clothes. :)

I have 2000 heddles, I have not woven with all of them yet, but have come close, and in fact will with finer yarn or wider projects in the future. It's a good investment all around if your head over heals into weaving. :)

The recipient sounds like an old horder. Tell her to use it or your cutting off the supply chain to any more. Sometimes you need some tough love. :)
